That's great Brian. I'll definitely keep an eye out for her. That's quite a nice gig she got.

Pssst, she's a big Yankee fan. NESN knew that and hired her anyway. LOL She really is extremely talented. I picture her to be a sideline reporter for the NFL one day.

This is a picture of her, she is the one circled in white.

She's pretty...looks a little familiar. I'll tell my husband to keep an eye out. Just weeks away from Red Sox hell for me.

Thumbs up

So far, so good Brian. My husband says she's very sharp and knows her baseball. Tina has a very nice presence. She gets a lot of camera time too.

I'm glad to hear it. I really would love to see her in action. She has a lot of talent. Maybe one day she can wear her Yankee cap.

Cervasio serves Sox well: NESN reporter gauges emotion

It’s one of the hottest days of the summer and by midday Tina Cervasio has already been teased by a few of her colleagues for wearing black to the ballpark.

But Cervasio, New England Sports Network’s Red Sox reporter, explains her choice of outfit is actually a camera-friendly trick of the trade.

“It hides the sweat,” Cervasio tells fellow members of the media on a number of occasions at Fenway Park last Tuesday.

Cervasio, 31, is NESN’s newest face on the field. She was hired last March and immediately tossed into covering spring training.

Covering one of the biggest teams in baseball is a high-profile gig for Cervasio, who’s worked in a series of fill-in and anchor roles for New York radio and TV stations, covering sports and traffic.

Most recognized for her on-air reports from Fenway during game broadcasts, Cervasio is adamant that she’s not just a pretty face in the stands filling holes in the action on the field.

“Sometimes that is frustrating, because that’s not the meat of my job,” Cervasio says.

“People think I’m sitting in canvas alley doing two hits a game,” she adds. “It’s definitely a reporter job.”

In the players’ clubhouse before the Sox’s match-up with the Kansas City Royals Tuesday, cameramen and reporters crowd the room, outnumbering the players. As Manny Ramirez passes through the room, he teases the media, saying “get your story and get out.”

Meanwhile, Cervasio is taking notes, sitting in on interviews with Terry Francona, getting soundbites from Wily Mo Pena and aggressively pursuing updates on pitcher Tim Wakefield’s back condition.

In fact, most of Cervasio’s work is done off-camera, digging up details for NESN’s pregame and post-game programs.

Cervasio says the first days on the job she was nervous seeking interviews in the locker room surrounded by other local reporters. But on Tuesday night she was often the first reporter to approach a player. Still, Cervasio says her role isn’t to play hardball with players. “I wasn’t hired to be a baseball expert,” she says. “It’s really more capturing the emotional aspect” of the game.

As a reporter for NESN, which is owned by the Red Sox organization, Cervasio has to deal with claims that she gets more access to players and team officials than other members of the local media.

That was the case when Cervasio was able to get a walk-off interview before other media outlets with Jason Varitek Tuesday night after he broke a team record for most games caught.

For the most part, Cervasio maintains, she isn’t treated any differently by the team. “I’m still the media to them,” she adds.

Cervasio describes the job at NESN as an ongoing learning experience, one she wouldn’t mind continuing when her contract ends in March.

Despite the distance from her husband, Kevin McKearney - who works in public relations for an arena football team - Cervasio says she likes Boston and the caliber of journalists that cover city’s intense sports scene. “I’m like the young kid meeting his favorite baseball player,” she says. “I’m working with the cream of the crop.”

NESN hired Tina Cervasio last year and immediately put her feet to the fire covering the Sox.
