Default Could Ellen Burstyn made a better Alice for the series?

I was watching "Alice doesn't Live Here Anymore" before I went to work this morning on one the cable channels. After seeing her in that dramatic role, I think they should have brought her in to play the lead character. I couldn't stand Linda Lavin, Ellen Burstyn could have brought a different kind of fiestiness to that character. Linda Lavin was boring.

I don't think the show would had lasted if Ellen Burstyn played the title character. Linda Lavin bought her singing abilities to the table and that what made the show. I enjoyed her singing on the show especially those show tunes. The only thing that bothered me about Linda was her need to make life difficult for her co-stars who pose as a threat to her i.e. Polly Holliday and Diane Ladd. Alice was more of an ensemble piece.

I'll tell you who would made a good Alice would had been Nancy Dussault, Muriel Rush of Too Close for Comfort, because she is a great singer and excellent sitcom actress. She can sing those broadway tunes.

Linda Lavin couldn't sing. She was horrible. Nancy Dussault would have made a good Ann Romano from One day At A Time.

Linda Lavin made the character boring. Looking at the movie, I think Ellen Burstyn would have made the lead charcter exciting. To me, Mel and Flo made the show anyway. Alice was just a body.

Interesting. I still need to see "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore". I've always heard it was a fine film, and I generally like Martin Scorsese- esp "GoodFellas"

I do agree with Garfieldkool about Linda Lavin being boring. The only stand out characters on the show was Mel and Flo

I liked her better in season 1. She seemed to have alot more personality.

I dont think Linda Lavin was boring. She played the very necessary part of the center of the show(like Mary was for MTM or Will for W & G).
The other characters needed her to bounce off of, Thats what makes it an ensemble show & why we are still talking about it almost 30 yrs later IMHO

We Linda's have to stick together

Do you know if they are going to come out with Aice on DVD. If you don't know, do you know where I could look?

Where is a source for this? You shouldn't be posting something without a source. Linda Lavin's singing ruled. I loved the "Alice" theme.
