Renault. Ren-NO.
It's French, bitch! The French car company Renault sold cars in the United States from the early fifties until 1987. Once the epitome of the poor workmanship and lackadaisical engineering we've come to expect from the frogs, today's Renault's are regarded as some of the best-made cars in the world. Once one of the weirdest-looking cars oin the world - hey, they're French! - Renaults are more stylish these days. As a peace offering to France - and as an experssion of hope that Renault (which, by the way, owns a controlling interest in Nissan) may once again grace these shores, I present a picture thread of Renaults. Just think of the typical Renault automobile as an S-car. As in, "Wow, look at that S-car go! )

So here's the first picture, one of a car we're all kind of familiar with. Called the 5 in France, it was sold here as. . .

Number nine, number nine. . . .
![]() Pictured above is the Renault 9. You might remember it - it was made by American Motors in Wisconsin and sold in the States as the Alliance. This was supposed to be the car that would keep AMC in buiness and Renault in North America. Introduced for the 1983 model year, it even won Motor Trend's Car of the Year award for '83. Depsite intially brisk sales, the Alliance proved to be a lousy piece of crap, and was, ironically, the reason Renault left the New World and why AMC was bought out by Chrysler. |

Remember the odd but racy Renault 17 coupe? It was Renault's entry in the comapct sport coupe market, a market dominated in America by the VW Scirocco and the Toyota Celica!
The 17 never had much of a chance, to be honest. |
