HI there I was hoping somebody out there has a copy, a tape, dvd, whatever, of the February 22, 1989 Unsolved Mysteries episode....
It has the segment with two Los Angeles bank robberies in which tunnels were built to get under the vault....the thieves accessed LA's vast storm sewer system....they were never caught....I think I know who did this....the second bank they tried to rob...the cops caught on before they could get anything good and a few days later they found ANOTHER tunnel...had they got the second and third one the way they hit the first Bank it would have been world famous at the time biggest heist in years.... |

Extremely interesting because that sewer system case is one of my absolute favorites. I'm amazed it was never solved and in fact earned almost zero publicity. I've tried to research online but come up empty. Agreed, if they had executed all the robberies via the completed tunnels, no doubt it would have been a high profile case and pursuit.
I'm a bit puzzled how you think you know who they are. If you were very young at the time of the episode filmed in your house in '91-'92, then you were much younger when the sewer bandits struck in the '80s. So it's info you would have come across long after the fact. No specifics necessary, but what leads you to isolate your suspects? |

Great post, SiberianKiss. But I'm not sure I would be revealing so much considering who your suspects are. Can't be too careful. Remember, you can always edit (delete) around here long after the post.
What is the name of the book with the chapter? The UM segment showed small all terrain vehicles that were used to transport the drilling materials and other items into the sewer. Apparently purchased in the San Diego area. At least one of them was abandoned when the robbers were nearly caught. I'm sure someone here has the segment on tape. |

I think this segment was shown last week or the week before. I don't have anything on tape, though.

I believe they were on last week and I may have it recorded, I haven't gone through last week's tapes yet. I'll look and see.

I'm pretty sure I still have the episode if all else fails.
BTW, this may sound stupid, but couldn't you just ask them? As you said, statute of limitations has expired. Just a thought. |

no it's not a stupid thought
I've wanted to (believe me!) but they don't live near me any more and I'm not gonna do that on the phone....I'm pretty curious to see how UM portrayed this and getting as much info as I can before I confront anybody. |

You could try a bit of finesse. Don't mention bank robbery at all. Just call them and say you're suddenly interested in a career involving sewers, and ask if they have any background or expertise.
