"Making The Beat", a new half-hour ensemble comedy, stars Shirley Jones as music promoter-manager Marie Phillips, and Suzanne Somers as Suzy Marshall, trumpeter and lead vocalist for the all-woman jazz-rock ensemble "Sentimental Voyage", a band that has a strong male following. Marie forms the group with assistance from a friend of her late husband's, Marcus Palmer[actor undecided]. Included in the band are guitarist Debbie Beverly[Justine Bateman], pianist Linda Campbell [Cathy Podewell], bassist Laura Ann Palmer [Lara Jill Miller], drummer Marianne Litman [Marcia Cross], and percussionist-bongo player Mary Morgan [Nancy McKeon]. Marie's granddaughter Molly [Madeline Zima] appears from time to time, wanting to get in the band, but is a little too young. Her parents, Gilbert and Sandra, are mentioned, but not seen. Stories depict themes such as touring and booking problems, as well as personal differences among the members. There will be at least one song played per episode.

Renamed "Making The Melody", the show will mow star Adrienne Barbeau as Kim Tobin, guitarist and leader of "Sentimental Voyage", which plays straight jazz. With Gail Edwards as Linda Campbell on piano, Lisa Vidal as Debbie Laurin on trumpet, Teri Copley as Laura Ann Damon on bass, Melinda Culea as Tammy Mercer, vibes, Wendy Phillips as drummer Marianne McCormick, and Marcia Strassman as Morgan Judd, bongos.

Anyhows, also starring are Josh Stamberg as Joel Watson, the band's founder and manager, and Jeremy Sumpter as Kim's son Marshall, who shares his mom's love of jazz, and who thinks of the idea for the band. Guests from the world of jazz include Karrin Allyson [who also sings the show's theme tune "Come On In/There's Music In The Air"], Diane Schuur, Diana Krall, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Joe Williams, and Dianne Reeves as guest vocalists.

Karen Duffy has been added to the cast as Valerie Watson, Joel's wife, co-manager of "Sentimental Voyage", and daughter of the founder-owner of Joel's agency employer, the unseen Marcus Palmer, who is described as big, bearded, and is a pipe smoker.

Adrienne Barbeau has been replaced by Janine Turner in the role of Kim Tobin, also, her son, Marshall [still played by Jeremy Sumpter] will have his name changed to Seth. Laura Ann [Teri Copley] will have her name changed slightly to Laura Lee.

Guest vocalist; Diane Schuur, who sings "You Are My Dream". "Dear Seth", At a high school dance, Seth is accused by a ruthless school administrator of raping a girl, despite the fact that he was only trying to save her from her real attackers. This crushes Seth's spirit, and it's up to Kim to clear her son's name. The SV ladies perform [at their regular venue, The Memorial] "A Song for Seth", which Kim wrote.

In "What Have You Done To Us?", a filmmaker [Bryan Cranston] decides to do a concert film about the band, titled "Sentimental Voyage: The Women and Their Music". All goes well, however, unbeknownst to Horace Sumner [Cranston], his unseen wife, who hates jazz, sabotages the film by performing so many terrible editing jobs, and when the members of "SV" see the film, they are disenchanted with the product. Fortunately, Horace removes the wife from all involvement with his work, and he shoots, and has someone else edit the film. The members approve of it. Also, Seth takes a driver's course. Kathy Kinney plays the driving instructor.

In "Down And Out", Marianne's jazz singer mother Suzanne McCormick-Litman [Dina Merrill] pays a visit to her drummer daughter's house. She has been feeling low ever since the tragic death of her second husband. Suzanne's vocal style is similar to real-life singer Annie Ross, and Marianne and Kim talk her into joining the band in a song, she agrees, and sings "I'm Your Special Woman" [while wearing a fur-collared coat]. This episode also introduces Molly Watson [Yvonne Zima], Joel and Valerie's daughter, for whom Seth babysits. Molly tries to make eyes at Seth, who is a little too old for her.

In this ep, Conchata Ferrell plays Linda's overbearing mom Gloria Jo, who constantly puts her daughter down for getting involved in what the mom calls "junk" music. Linda and her mom, who prefers classical and opera, argue back and forth until Kim intervenes and defends Linda. Gloria Jo gives in, and the two Campbells bury the hatchet. The New York Dolls perform "You've Got To Have Rhythm" with the SV ladies.
