You might know that Norman Lear's SANFORD & SON was based on the British
sitcom STEPTOE & SON. But did you know the British version starred Wilfred Brambell (who played Paul's grandfather in The Beatles' first film, "A Hard Day's Night")? |

I got a hold of two episodes of it and the first thing that suprised me was the cast was white. I had never seen it before and I was thinking they would be black.

Interesting information and nice pictures. I had no idea that Sanford and Son was based on a Britcom.

Norman Lear adapted it as the American series SANFORD & SON. The British show ran from 1962 to 1974. Lear's SANFORD & SON didn't debut until 1972. So, no, STEPTOE was not a "spin-off"; in fact, it was the inspiration for SANFORD a decade later. |
