Default Oscar on the Brain...

Maybe I've got a deadly cocktail of Oscar and ML in my system, but I've had a thought ("I know that I can seem the smoke rising from your brain.")

So I'm watching "Walk the Line" last night. I wanted to see Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon, the likely winners for Best Actor and Actress. I'm like 97% finished when I realize that while I like their performances, I didn't see anything particularly Oscar worthy. UNTIL UNTIL UNTIL! For those who haven't seen it, there is a scene where the two are performing, doing their little flirty thing on stage. However, there is this whole other level to their acting because he has just proposed to her backstage and is trying to get her to say yes, but still stay "in character" while performing and so is she. It is THIS wonderful scene where the acting has that multi-leveled thing going on, and I immediately thought of Moonlighting. The whole scene was SO David and Maddie. Think of the last scene in "Witness" or a thousand others.

Anyway, this is a long way of saying if the Academy is saying they're all for honoring performances that our Cybill and Bruce PERFECTED 17 years ago, is it that far-fetched to think an ML movie could REALLY bring home one of the gold, bald guys? I've always thought that, IMHO the way to get Bruce on board is to whisper oscar in his adorable little ear. It has always seemed a real shame to me that someone who is such a gifted actor has opted to play roles that a lesser man could certainly handle. Don't get me wrong, he does the absolute BEST with them that ANYONE could, but IMHO, there isn't much depth there to be acted well. We all know how much this man can shine given some great writing. Thoughts? Other than, adyjdy just shut up already?

I haven't responded to this because I haven't seen ANY Oscar nominated movies this year. The only thing I will pay to watch and go out of my way to see is a Bruce Willis or Cybill Shepherd movie. Occasionally, my kids will get me to a popular movie like Harry Potter etc. but other than those type movies that are a kids-must see, I don't have the time or money to go and see what I consider junk.

I would rather stay home and watch my DVDs of Moonlighting or Bruce or Cybill any day. The quality of their performances on Moonlighting, the CHEMISTRY between them -- is unmatched on the big screen in my opinion.

I would rather watch TLPS, or Bandits, or The Whole Nine Yards, or Die Hard I, or Seduced, or The Heartbreak Kid etc. There are some other movies on DVD that I love also like Field of Dreams, or Stand By Me, or Ghost, but mostly I stick with Bruce and Cybill. I LIKE watching them - I have been watching Cybill in print or on the big/small screen for at least 35 years and I hope to keep on watching her for many more years to come. The same with Bruce.

As for a Moonlighting movie or a different movie with Bruce and Cybill in it, of course I would welcome anything. BUT for now, I am just hoping that seasons 4 and 5 come out on DVD, and that Bruce and Cybill do at least 5 commentaries or more. Let's have Glenn take a break, and maybe Cybill will be more comfortable in giving her views.

That would be wonderful

Oh, and I loved "Walk the Line." I kind of got a Maddie and David vibe at times myself. Glad it wasn't just me. I think I always look for similarites, but I don't think I'm always aware I'm even looking

Just wanted to add my bit here! I think Bruce deserved an oscar for his performance in Twelve Monkeys, or The Sixth Sense. He has given many multi-layered performances which have deserved more kudos. I think he's a very underrated actor and wont be appreciated until he's old or no longer here. I don't think he'll get an oscar yet...

I do agree with you that he always does a good job even in a bad film tho!!

Well, the Oscars are over. My daughter picked Crash to win. I picked the Moonlighting Pilot to win.

DID ANYONE ELSE HEAR MOONLIGHTING MUSIC BEING PLAYED ABOUT HALF WAY THRU AS BACKGROUND MUSIC? I swear I heard it.

A comment by me: Uma Thurman (looking gorgeous last night by the way) has brought this (again) to my attention:

There is a commercial currently on TV to promote an UmaThurman/Meryl Streep DVD that is out now. The promo shows a kiss between Uma and someone I don't know. Well, the kiss seems totally unbelieveable and fake to me. I actually cringe and then shut my eyes when I see it. This again brings something so important up -- THE KISSES IN MOONLIGHTING WERE SO FANTASTIC THAT I CAN WATCH THEM OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. THEY WERE BELIEVEABLE AND SENSUOUS AND LUSCIOUS AND EXCITING AND SWEET ETC. ETC. ETC.

Most of the kisses I see in the movies or on TV bother me. I have stated before that I usually watch with one eye closed because all I can think of is how unnatural the two actors look. The kisses between Bruce and Cybill were as natural as could be - the bodies meshing together, the looks between them, EVERYTHING was just perfect.

I agree with you 100% Kismet. You can tell that they were as real as they come because when ever i see a scene from a film where Bruce and Cybill are kissing someone else it`s different from when they would kiss each other , Iv`e never seen Bruce use his tongue when doing a kissing scene except with Cybill. To take a quote from Bruce himself "we always kissed" It just seems to me that every time either one has a kissing scene with another actor you can tell that it`s acted .

I don't have any Bruce on video or DVD other than Moonlighting but I might go and watch Cybill in something else with someone else to test that theory. I think you are probably quite correct!

I feel that way about Bruce. I like the way he kissed Cybill - anyone else gives me the heebeegeebees.

BUT I think Cybill had a couple of good kisses with others:
Gregory Harrison in Seduced (although I did not see any tongues used ). The scenes were really sexy, particularly with Cybill in a man's shirt and I think WHITE SOCKS but I could be wrong. She says something to him during the lovemaking scene that is really interesting (of course you can't HEAR it, but you can see her saying it)
Timothy Bottoms in TLPS - Timothy looked inexperienced but Cybill didn't. "She wore blue velvet..."

I maybe wrong but weren`t all those films of Cybills you mentioned made before Moonlighting and before she had met Bruce.

Yup, nothing fake about Bruce and Cybill. Gotta agree with all the comments about their kisses in ML.

I'm pretty sure Bruce used tongues in Color of Night, but that film was the least erotic, least interesting film he's ever done! No imagination required in that film!!

Ooooh Mul - I totally agree about The Color of Night. Absolutely no tinglin' in my toes during that one (or anywhere else for that matter ). I usually find total nudity a turn-off on the big screen. It takes me out of the scene instead of bringing me in.

Now about the kisses in Witness, or The Straight Poop, or Dream Sequence or ALL OF THEM in Moonlighting -- my toes are already tinglin' just thinking about them.

If any of you get a chance to watch Cybill in Seduced, do it. The scene with Gregory Harrison in which Cyb has his shirt on, just sitting on the bed looking beautiful -- now that is SEXY. Cybill with her hair messed up is just about as sexy as you can get, as in Atomic Shakespeare - Bruce said the same thing in the commentary. Cybill with her long neck exposed is also really sexy. When Bruce smiles that great smile, he is also very sexy - he did it on Letterman and The View last week. You don't have to be nude to be sexy.
