Please help- DVD Recorder that says "No Disc" - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I can't believe this.

I just bought a Pioneer Dvd Recorder off someone on ebay- brand new- and after making my first DVD-R (which worked) the machine will not recognize a disc being in the machine. Any disc of any type.

It seems like it's not even spinning. The machine itself functions fine otherwise.

Now when I intially put in the blank dvd (A Philips one) it made some clunky noises, then stopped. Then I recorded from a tape and finalized and it worked.

Now nothing. I have not used the machine at all- I fooled around with some DVD-RW and that was ok and now after my first DVD-R it's just saying "NO disc"

Anyone with any dvd expertise and experience have any idea what the problem could be? Is it the motor, the belt or something?

Help, please.

a couple of things to try

your machine may not like a certain disc brand, thats common, try several other brands

your machine may need to have its firm ware upgraded , it may be an older firmware version

do a google for the model and also firmware revision

its free and the directions should be therea s well

there may have been a reason why the person was selling this machine

i have a pioneer 107 drive in my sony vaio desktop

thats what it came with

and i stopped useing it very soon after i bought it, i found 30% or more clunkers from the pioneer

i havent used the drive in over a year now, i wouldnt ever buy another pioneer

The thing is, it won't recognize any disc that I put in there (including store bought movies) it's not even spinning. It's a stand alone player too, not a computer burner.

The tech guy at Pioneer said that it could be the laser is off line or a spindle problem.

But the player has been run for a total of like 4 hours! How can it just crap out like that.

Serves me right I suppose for not buying from a store. I'm never buying electronics (machines) on the internet again.

Even if I got it from an internet store I would then have to box it back up and pay to ship it back and wait and see. Screw that and I guess I'm screwed too.

Really puts a bad taste in my mouth about DVD recording.

i have purchased a boat load of electronice on the net

everything i buy, is from the net

one needs to be aware of the store--site your buying from

it has little to do with dvd players--recorders in general

there are shady operators selling every item

shipping it back is no huge deal

and its better to wait for a refund, than have a piece of junk sitting there to remind you of how you got taken

You should have some recourse. Contact the seller and see if he's willing to take it back. If not, you can file a buyer protection claim through Ebay. If you paid through Paypal, you also have some recourse there. If you paid with a credit card, you usually have some protection there too. Check your credit card agreement. Since it's a new product, your Pioneer warranty is still good. Contact them and tell them the problem. You may have to send it in to them to fix it. I they can't, they should send you a new one. They may have a repair service they use in your area. Bottom line is you are not stuck with it.

Pioneer says that unless its from an authorized dealer it is not covered and they want $70 to just look at it. A local place will look at it for $37.

I contacted the seller and he said to contact Pioneer (done) and that he will do his best to help me out.

I don't know what that means.
If he pays for the repairs that is fine.

I don't know what paypal and my credit card can do to help.

Most sellers of electronics have a DOA (dead on arrival) policy. If it does not work when you get it, it can be returned. Read what the auction states. You can still file a claim through Ebay, and through Paypal (if you paid that`way). Many credit card companies give you protection if you paid with the credit card. If you did, give them a call and see what they can do.

it can be either two things. what speed of the disk you are using. not all players will record 8x' when you buy it. simple to fix, just call customer support and they'll send you a upgrade disc. that's what i had to do with my dvd recorder or the worst... it has died. couldn't handel the mail travel.

One quick thing to check: make sure you're using the right type of disc. Some DVD recorders only record to +R discs, while others only record to -R discs, and still other models can record to both types. Make sure you're not trying to record to a -R disc on a recorder that only uses +R.

Yeah, I would never buy electronics online, especially from ebay, not just because returns would be a real hassle, but because all online things have to be mailed to your house, and no matter how well it's packaged, with delicate electronic equipment all it takes is one nasty drop from a postal worker and bam! Something inside could easily be jarred loose or snap. I've heard that happen to scanners alot, for one. Returns to local stores are so much easier, and 'mail dropping' happens alot more than we'd like to think.

The above poster is right about the DVD-r or +r. Luckily I bought all +r's for mine first, but after reading posts on this site I checked my box, and my DVD burner takes ONLY DVD+r/+rw, (and it's worked great), but I'm lucky I didn't buy any -r's before checking.
Although I just snooped on the Pioneer site and it looks like they're all DVD-r's, so maybe the burning speeds on the media?.

When I couldn't get mine to burn complete MPEG's out of the blue, I read a help site that said that Windows Messanger (msmsgs.exe) running in the background interferes (Norton Anti-Virus & Outlook express starts it up). Bizzare that it would, but I disabled it and the burner works fine now.
I know that small problem isn't your problem right now (although it may help later). (I also turn off Norton Anti-Virus just because they both compete for my current memory, and it just works quicker that way).

It's prolly a defective machine or incorrect media.

I agree with T-Greg. I THINK the protocol is to open a claim with Ebay first (although I really haven't heard about Ebay helping out much in these types of situations.) Then when/if Ebay closes it, open a claim with Paypal, if you paid with Paypal (pretty much all reputable sellers accept Paypal - if the seller's feedback is questionable or poor & they do not accept Paypal - steer clear of them - there's a reason they don't accept Paypal!)). If Paypal rules in the seller's favor (which I doubt they would in this case), file a claim with your credit card company. Once you open a claim, do not close it until you are satisifed (because you can't reopen one). There are time limits on when you can file claims (Ebay is 60 days, IIRC, don't know what Paypal's is but it's longer than Ebay's.) If you exceed these dates, you are screwed. A REPUTABLE seller will understand - but with the sellers response that they will "do their best to help you out", I would DEFINITELY open a claim. & not rely upon their word It sounds like this seller is dropshipping, which I thought was against Ebay Rules, eventhough many sellers do it. Go to the Ebay message boards for more help - Paypal & Seller Central are the best places for this topic. (Click COMMUNITY (at the top) & DISCUSSION BOARDS), There is a wealth of information on those boards for both buyers & sellers. Good luck.

i have a silly question

how do you think these items get to the retail store ?

many of the things i see on store shelves, get there via ups

since they have the shipping stickers all over the boxes

things are packed very well from the assembly point

they are shipped by numerous methods, from malaysa, singapore, india, china, etc

you may choose to pay 30% more at the retail level, than i do via the internet

and thats all good

the problem this person is haveing, is because he purchased it from left hand lewey, on ebay, its either gray area, referbished, or a repak

there are numerous authotized dealer on ebay, and countless authorized dealers on the net, that sell much cheaper than the down town brick and motor stores

even best but sellls on line , in many cases, far cheaper than their own store, and you can drive over and pick it up

when i wanted a laptop, i waited for a deal to drop out of the sky

best buy had one of their one day non advertised net sales

i got the $ 1099 latest technology model, via the net and in store pickup, at $ 749

people who walked into the store would pay $350 more than i did

thats why the net is a good place to but electronics

oh ya, the three laptops that best buy had ready for pickup, all three had ups stickers on the boxes

as did about 5 of the lcd tvs in the same shelf

dont exclude yourself from a good deal, with the no mail theory, its not really a valid point
