Default The vanessa and Make-up episode

You know when I was younger, I didnt' find Claire all that annoying, but watching the Cosby show now, she gets on my nerves royally.

The way she said "Vanessa was WEARING MAKE-UP"! Like she was caught in a drug bust or something! Now, I can understand not wanting your 13 year old daughter looking like she's ready to take a stroll down Sunset Blvd at 2 in the morning, but unstead of having a hissy as if that is the worst thing she can do...that you can compromise....my daughter is 14, and I SHOW her HOW to wear makeup tastefully. I allow her to wear a touch of mascara..not gobs of it...lip gloss and a pinch of nuetral eyeshadow. She's happy, I'm happy she's not looking like a whore, and I don't have to worry about her sneaking MAKE UP...OH HORRORS!!!!!!!!

Claire had a stick up her butt in that one!!!

Rules are rules, Vanessa broke a rule of the house she knew about as she had TWO older sisters that had to obide by that rule.

As for worrying about that instead of more important things, I was a teenager when this show was popular and the children in my school didn't do drugs, as much as they do now, or, drink to the point of drunkedness or bring guns to school on a daily basis, but, now-a-days those type of things are common place. I think my parents would have been envious of Vanessa's parents if makup was the only MAJOR thing they had to worry about me and now my younger sibling getting into. (Just my opinion)

I so agree with you. When I was a teen, I remember doing things I knew I was told not to do. Wearing make-up was one of them. My God, Claire made it a big deal. The way she acted with Vanessa, is the way she should have acted WITH DENISE when Denise was failing college, and being a dumb, lazy brat!!!! She could have explained to Vanessa that the reason she doesn't want her wearing make-up is because Vanessa is beautiful without it. In other words, use reverse psychology, not be so mad like she found Vanessa kissing a guy in her room or something.

Although on ADW Claire did lay it into Denise about her failing grades in College.

And when I was in the 6th grade my mom wouldn't let me wear red nail polish (of all things) until I was 14. And one day I was at a friends house and I took it upon myself to polish my nails a bright red. And when I got home I was in sooo much trouble for that. So I can see why Claire would get upset, like someone else posted Vanessa had 2 older sisters and she knew the rules.

True..she broke a rule (IT WAS A STUPID RULE!) true she shouldn't break the rules, but with kids especially teens you have to pick your battles. Yes she should follow the rules, but Claire's reaction was the reaction one would have if you caught your kid smoking crack! I agree with Irene, that you can TALK to your kid about the make up, If you've been through it twice already maybe just MAYBE it's time to try a different approach. Sometimes thats why kids sneak and do what they shouldn't be doing. Of course I'm only refering to petty stuff like this NOT stuff like drugs and sex. This episode was up there with the "who broke mom's favorite vase" from the Brady Bunch!
Maybe I got annoyed because I just happen to find Claire annoying!!

Yeah, it seems that some sitcoms made huge issues abt petty stuff. I agree with you. I found Claire annoying now as an adult, as opposed when it first aired. I was 19 when it first came on. Technically I was an adult, but I am more of an adult now, then at 19. I am so annoyed with the Claire character and how she behaves. Ok, big deal, it's a rule not to wear make-up. So what if Vanessa already knew the rule. Alot of kids know the common sense rules and yet, they still violate them. kids are kids. teens are teens. Look when Rudy didn't listen to the rule abt not playing with the juicer. Look at what she caused. It could have been worse too. Claire didn't get an attitude with her. The excuse may be that Vanessa is older and should know better, but when you are a teen, you don't know better sometimes. You just go along with the crowd, peer pressure, etc. And if one remembers the episode, Vanessa's friends "conned" her into wearing the make-up by giving her all these lame excuses. Bottom line, she didn't need to jump down her throat like that.

I think the fact that she broke the rules and lied and she tried to hide it, In a very poor way I may add, That's why she got into trouble. You just don't break rules that you know are already set and then not get into trouble for breaking. There are consequences to everything, I don't care how minor or major it is, you get punished for doing things you know you have no business doing. Vanessa knew that her mom would be upset with her and yet she did it anyway. When she was in the bathroom she said that her mom didn't want her wearing makeup. But she put it on, So yeah she should have gotten into trouble for it.

I don't think she shouldn't have gotten away with it either. I never said she shouldn't get in trouble. I am saying that Claire didn't need to make a huge issue out of it. Ms. Perfect Claire already caught her...anyone would have caught her, since she still had the make-up on. The post was implying should she have made it such a huge deal by getting so upset? I think not. I have caught my youngest daughter in a lie, but I don't go getting upset abt it. I caught her and now it's time to punish her. Getting upset doesn't make the point, the eventual consequence of lying (punishment) is what the child will remember. There are so many things that kids can do that are cause for being upset...when there are petty things like putting on make-up (and what little girl doesn't want to try on make-up) just take it with a grain of salt and not get upset abt it and dish out the punishment for breaking the rule and lying.

In one episode Claire asked Rudy what one things she couldn't stand, and Rudy said it's when someone would lie. I'm the same way, the worst thing you could do to me is lie. So I believe that Claire was right in the way she handled Vanessa. You have to discipline your children or they will run over you. When you have a rule, that rule is law, once you have broken it you have to face your punishment, no matter how small the rule seem, it's a rule.

Exactly. but don't harp on the lie, dish out the punishment. Case closed. I am not going to waste any time telling someone what they already know, or should know. Now, it's time for the consequences. Screaming or yelling abt "you lied to me" etc. etc. etc. is a waste of time. It's all abt saying, "I see you lied to me and you broke a rule. Now, it's time for the consequences." My teen daughter has it in WRITING what her rules are and with those rules are the consequences listed there. So, she knows what the rules are, and she knows what exactly will be her punishment if and when she breaks those rules. That gives the teen/child time to see ahead what will happen when they disobey.

I don't think Claire was screaming at Vannesa over the make up, and as a parent I know that there will be times when I will yell at my kids when they do stupid things, it's human nature to do so. No one can't say that there hasn't been a time when they haven't raised their voice at their kids. Some times that's the only way you can get your point across, It happens and it will continue to happen.

On Roseanne she screamed at her kids all the time, she hit and kneaded DJ in the butt once LOL, she called them spoiled brats.
