Of course I want it on DVD.

But I am hesitant to say "even without original music" because if it comes out that way there is no chance it will ever be released with it.

They are not going to release 2 sets.

And no matter what anybody says, the music problem can be overcome, there are examples of other music heavy shows- Freaks and Geeks for instance- that came out.

So if this music thing takes another 10 years and then is guaranteed to come out, I'd rather wait. Because if they release DVDs without original music now, that's all you're gonna get.

i would pay twice as much to have WKRP IN CINCINNATI released with original music!
SHOUT!FACTORY has proven it can be done.

Default With original music

If a WKRP DVD set is released, I would have to agree that it MUST have the original music. In the past ten years, there have been a number of times that the altered show aired for a while -- TV Land, Nick at Night, etc. I hear it aired in Canada for a while. So the opportunity to make videotaped copies from TV for one's personal collection has come and gone, but what the people seem to asking for here, including myself, is the entire show (not the "trim-it-to-stuff-in-more-commercials" version) with the ORIGINAL music. Those of us who saw the shows when they first aired in the '70s and '80s know that many/most of the jokes get their strength from the music playing in the background. A few years ago I did videotape several shows with the "wrong" music, but I would still be willing to pay for the original shows. Not hundreds of dollars per season, mind you, but as much or a maybe even a little more than the price of a season of MASH or Frasier.

Default DVD sets online

This evening, I came across a few websites offering the entire series on DVD, with original music. However, not being familiar with any of the sites and knowing that Fox owns the right, I'm wondering if this is an elaborate scam. Anybody know anything regarding these DVD sets?

xsntrk,

I don't think those sites are a scam, but they're selling bootleg copies of the show; probably from VHS recordings of the syndicated episodes. I considered buying a set myself but the high price, not knowing the quality of the video and not knowing if they're episodes with original or replacement music kept me from making the purchase. If anybody here has bought this set in question I for one would appreciate a review.

dlemond,

I love your avatar! I used to watch WPIX a lot during that period and remember before they were 24 hours they used to sign off at night with a great jazz version of "I'll Take Manhattan". I still have a blue satin 11 Alive jacket in my closet!

I want it with the original music, some how it would take away from the feel of the show if they put in generic music. Its like those ringtones that aren't the real music.

Although I would take the show anyway they give it long as they put it on DVD.

Me too and I'd be willing to pay up to around 50 or 60 dollars for a full season set. I do have the MTM 3 video set and a video of my favorite episodes taped off Canadian tv but like others have said it's just not right without the original music. Not to mention all the bits cut for time. I'm hoping that one day Shout Factory will be able to do this. I've bought many fine DVD releases from them already and know they could do a great job on WKRP.

xsntrk,

If you can still contact these sources, you might send them an e-mail politely asking what evidence they can present to verify that these are the original show with the original music. If these are copies of the show they videotaped at home way back then, then perhaps they can offer some proof, like leaving in a commercial or two that would only be typical for that day, like an ad for "the new 1980 Ford Mustang" or something. I've done this at least a couple of times; once to reveal that the seller thought he bought an honest set of shows, but apparently didn't. Also, the shows should be something like 27 or 28 minutes long (without commercials) instead of the current 22 or 23 minutes that half hour shows are broadcast.

Default DVD set

Here's what I know....if these are truly original run, the run time is either 24:30 or 25:00. I know this because I had made a trade with a fellow who had the original series taped on an ancient Betamax machine, and they included the original CBS voiceovers/teasers during the end credits. Unfortunately, I have only 8 episodes and the quality is not great.

As a member of the WKRP Yahoo group, I put together a set of episodes from the first syndication run in 1983. These are not complete, but are as close to original as are in circulation, as far as I know. How do I know they are from the first syndication run? I taped them myself, from WGN-TV in Chicago back in 1983 when I got my first VHS machine. The run time on these is only 22:30, so 2 minutes (or so) was shaved from each episode. The bad news is that I recorded them in SLP (6-hour) mode, the good news is that I used a very high quality Maxell tape for the series.

I also know that a DVD set of the series with truly all-original music exists, but does not circulate. Don't ask me how, but I know. Perhaps one day....

But I disagree with those who believe the original series with all original music will ever be released. Even "Freaks and Geeks" had to make exceptions. They did their best, but made a few concessions when rights could not be acquired. WKRP was truly swamped with music, by comparison. While I have no doubt that Shout Factory has the best chance of accomplishing this, I don't believe even they can pull it off.

Just my $ .02.

Fox very well may be working on getting the rights to the songs. One of my favorite shows of all time (Moonlighting) was just released with the original songs. For the longest time it looked as though they were either going to release it without the songs, or they were not going to release it at all. Finally everything worked out and they are releasing the seasons on DVD.

Never give up hope!!

I'm certain WKRP will be commercially released on DVD in the future.

We may have to wait until all the music enters the public domain though.
