Default This Old House

We live in a townhouse. It's very nice, but old and restored, although I think it has the original electricity and plumbing.

I blowdry my hair in my bedroom. In the summer, if I use the hairdryer when the AC is on in the livingroom, I blow a fuse. I also can't heat my curling iron or hot rollers while I'm drying my hair.

In the kitchen, I can't use the micowave, toaster oven or coffee maker at the same time without blowing a fuse.

If one of us runs the kitchen water, the water in the shower will scald you to death. If I'm washing dishes, and my husband flushes the toilet, I burn my hands.

We've learned to plan things, but of course we forget a lot.

Anyone else living this madness besides me?

No problems like that at my house with electricity. It was built in 1964. When my brother lived here, he had about two dozen things plugged in (TV, computer, Fax machine, stereo, tape deck, cd player, etc) and the fuses never blew.

No big problems with the water, either.

We just bought an old farmhouse that was built in 1874. One of the first things we did was have the electricity brought up to code. An electrician friend of ours replaced the fuse box, circuit breakers and wiring. I know it can be expensive, but Janice, I would seriously cosider having the electrical system in your house updated. Microwaves and other modern appliances use up a lot of juice which those old circuits were not designed to handle. It can be very dangerous and possibly start a fire. One of our new neighbors was telling us about how their home burned down several years ago due to old outdated wiring and they had to rebuild.
Anyways, besides a few of the hassles I love having an older home, so much character and history that these newer homes just don't have. We have some of the original copper plumming as well and the toilet even has a pull chain. There is an original phone from the 1920's in the kitchen that still works, original doors and doorknobs (they don't work so good anymore though). We're having a lot of fun fixing up the place. Yesterday I replaced some of the molding around the front door while my son was napping.

The best way to describe it is a two-level condo. We have bedrooms upstairs, but it's still not a one-family house. We have a deck, and there's another town house next door.

We have that problem at my house also.. Seems like thier isnt enough water to properly run thru the house!!

What I really hate is when I fill up the tub and the water is not very warm!
