Question Does anyone else find this a little rude?

Earlier today, someone called the house and asked to speak with my dad, who was at work. I replied politely that my dad was not available at the time but that I would happy to leave a message for him if this person would just leave their name and number. The guy replied with a curt, "Uh, no. I'll call back later."

Does anyone else think that's a bit rude? What's so hard about leaving a message for a person you are trying to reach? He called back again when my dad still wasn't home yet and again hung up when I asked for his phone number so my dad could call him when he gets home.

it's not exactly rude, but the tone he seemed to have had probably made it seem so. he shouldn't have been such an ass.

Sounds like a bill collector, survey, or telemarketer. Those are the only three jerks that talk like that. I can't imagine a friend of your dad's doing that.

That's what I figured, Irene. If it was a friend or relative or someone, they'd just say to tell my dad they called and they'd try again later.

I don't really think it's rude but it does get annoying when people keep on calling and they never want to leave a message. The least that guy could have done was ask when the best time to reach your dad would be. At least then he would have had an idea of when to call back instead of calling again at any old time and bugging you again.

I wouldn't say the statement itself was rude, but as others have said, the way he said it may have been.

Sometimes when people are calling, especially if it's about something not overly important, they can't be bothered to leave a message.

I don't think it's rude. I do that sometimes, but only because I actually want to speak to the person. Maybe that's why the other person on the line said that to you.

Last week, a credit card company called me and wanted me to take some kind of a survey. They had kept calling, and I just got some pretty bad news that day and wasn't in the mood to talk. Eventually, I answered the phone instead of letting it ring 8 million times. I politely said "No, I'm sorry, but I really don't have any time for that right now."

Immediately when I said that, the guy hung up on me. No "thank you anyway" or any of that. He just simply hung up.

No, I don't find it rude. We've had those types of phone calls happen at work where someone (be it a personal call OR bill collector) says "no, I'll call back later" or "yes, the message is...."

I believe it all depends in HOW their response was said. If it was abrupt and standoffish, then yes. If it was polite and reticent, then no.

I also believe if it was a private and personal message, then it is understandable to not go forth and leave the message.
