Default James was dead wrong for telling Florida she can't go to school

James is probably my fav character on the show, but he is too old fashion. Florida is too, but he should have wanted her to go to school. What he wanted a dumbass black mammy wife?! As much as James got knocked on his ass, he should have wanted for another family member to do something with their life.

I agree with you on this, he should have wanted his wife to better herself. He wanted to be the only breadwinner in the house and that was the wrong attitude to have especially when they were poor.

Both of you are so right. And Kool, you have me LMAO regarding that mammy comment. I mean, was he so ignorant or was it that damn pride. When I see James acting that way I always remember that saying "Pride cometh before a fall" and fall he did!!!! in the poorhouse and eventually the grave BECAUSE HE DIDN'T GO TO ALASKA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You really can't fault James for his pride, plus he was afraid that he would lose Florida.

Lose Florida to what?

Most men like James were (and unfortunately still are) are afraid or something like that, of their women having an education, making more money, making any sort of money really, having a life, having a career or job. Their egos get bruised. I am so glad I had a father that encouraged me and my sister to be all that we can be and not rely on a man for any reason financially.
My ex husband was like James. Didn't want me to be more educated than I already was. When we were getting a divorce, he ranted and raved to my family it was because I had a career, $$$, etc. and that he wasn't at "my level" anymore. That was sooooo bogus. I was an educated person when he met me. He just wanted my a$$ home making babies and being a wife. And when he couldn't "control" me, he found ways (the wrong ways) to try and control me.
James would never lose Florida in the sense that she would leave him. He didn't even give her a chance.

He wasn't going to lose Florida. At this point, I think you can fault him for his pride they were so poor they couldn't afford not to have two people capable of bringing in a paycheck.

What it was, James recieved the news of Florida going to school at the wrong time. Remember that was the day he rushed home to tell his wife something he felt would have her so happy and when he heard that she was going back to school I guess it just OVERSHADOWED his good news. Not that he wasn;t supposed to be happy for his wife but Florida just was so excited and never really seemed to be that thrilled about james getting a raise.

Notice Florida had that problem alot. In "too old blues" when James was trying to tell Florida he didn't get the job, she kept brushing him aside, and saying "oh James, I want to hear the good news" etc. She did that same brush off in some other episodes. He had to yell at her to get her to shut up!

He realized he was wrong at the end of the episode, so that's what counts. He was also old fashioned, probably from upbringing. You still can't blame him imo.

I disagree. I think James had ALOT of common sense, street smarts, etc. It was just a lack of education, not necessarily intelligence. You must admit, he WAS alot brighter than J.J.-lol

I don't think it was ever explained if Florida actually finished night school. I doubt it, because after James died, all she could get was a bus driver job.
