Hi everyone!!
I haven't posted here in a couple of months and thought I would do that now. I wanted to share my thoughts on the new CW Network starting in the fall. This will be an especially interesting read for anyone living near Chicago. First, I think that new network makes sense. I do know right now that the WB and UPN on their own are struggling severely and I can't see their ratings improving anytime soon. Hopefully, merging the two networks together with their highest rated shows will be more beneficial that way. Each network has had some success stories, but not anything consistent. I have read these rumors that the 8 or so stations owned by Fox in the markets where their stations are UPN affiliates suggesting a Fox 2 spinoff of Fox. I personally don't see how that's going to work, especially when those markets already have a Fox affiliate. It might be a good idea if Fox 2 had a completely new lineup with shows Fox doesn't have. One smart way may be to tailor each of the Fox 2 affiliates to their individual markets. There are two ideas I think would work well. 1) Ask all 8 markets if they think a Fox Spinoff network, via their websites and writing in, would be a good idea. If so, let them suggest shows for the spin off network. 2) If the spin-off network idea doesn't appeal to everyone, then I think the stations should be totally independent. Let people make suggestions for shows their respective market could show. There are so many good shows out there that if these 8 stations do it right their stations will do well. The other 7 markets outside Chicago NEED to loolk at Me-TV's setup, because that station's ratings are through the roof with no signs of slowdown! What does everyone think of those ideas? Even if you're outside Chicago, I'd highly encourage you to drop one of the 7 other Fox owned stations a line and tell them what you would like to see. They need to remember, to get ratings they have to give a reason to tune in, so they should be very open to viewer suggestions. I can say WPWR has become Power 50 and has dropped the UPN logo out. Here in Chicago, Fall will be even more interesting for another reason. Nothing against PBS, but I honestly, truly do not see how much longer that network will last. It's a matter of time before it goes under. Here, we have WTTW (11), WYCC (20) and WYIN (56) as PBS affiliates. If PBS should go under by fall, wellll then we have potentially all together 4 new independents. Also, in recent weeks a few channels that were un-used are running test patterns, so no matter how you look at it, Chicago TV will ultimately be very different in 5 and a half months. Haven't seen anything like this in 10 years..not since WCIU went mainstream independent and WGBO went to Spanish. Will be interesting, looking forward to Fall. Any other thoughts anyone would like to add? Bill |
