if she has not told him "I love you"? Louis Gossett's character is not dumb that he would ask a young girl to marry him if she hasn't TOLD HIM SO. I have seen this episode since it's first run, and it still mystifies me as to why? Thelma even told Flo "Oh he knows I love him" when Flo asked her if she loved him? That statement tells you she never told the guy she loved him. She may have responded with gestures when he said those words to her, but still, it makes no sense.

It's just like when you hear about people who get married on their first date LOL. And you know that they hadn't said I love you. It was a stupid of Thelma and whatshisname.

Irene, you hit the nail on the head. If the girl hesitates when he asks if she loves him - that's the answer right there.
