That is basically the idea, except it was not the "wife of a former employer" who was sending the anonymous defamatory notes. The ep begins with Alfred Dimsdale, an old friend of French, coming to visit French in the apartment, and Dimsdale sees what "complete authority" French has in the household when he closes the door on a barefoot hippie who comes thinking he is going to take Cissy dancing. Dimsdale then meets Bill and says he will be looking for employment in America, and adds, "I must say I envy Giles and his excellent position here." Then the 'poison pen' notes start coming, and Bill suspects Dimsdale, thinking he is after French's job. So he sends for Dimsdale to come to his office and he offers him the job just to get his reaction. Dimsdale says he would not be interested because he is not one to take care of children, although he admires those who do have that talent-- "people like Giles and my sister." His sister, Alice, is introduced to Cissy in the park by Miss Faversham. Alice comments that she had expected Mr. French to bring the children to the park instead of Cissy. But Cissy, having become disturbed by the notes sent about Mr. French and his conning and jilting of Lord Glenmore's daughter (and French admits Lord Glenmore fired him), has reacted by trying to keep Mr. French clear of the kids and herself.
Finally Uncle Bill has a talk with Cissy and convinces her that Mr. French should be given the benefit of the doubt about the situation, since he has never shown himself to be anything but trustworthy. Cissy then thanks French for being truthful, yet tolerant of her overreaction. Then later, when the B & J have gone to bed, French decides to tell about what happened-- that Glenmore's daughter was an overprotected young lady who seldom had contact with young men her own age, so she thought she was in love with French, whom she respected for his urbanity. Glenmore found this out and asked for French's help; so French agreed to make it appear that he was using the daughter to obtain money from Glenmore, so technically he was 'dismissed with cause.' The Dimsdales were also in service to Lord Glenmore at that time, and Alfred knew the truth about the situation, but Alice did not; therefore Alice considered it 'her duty' to inform the Davis family that French was a con artist. The audience is led to believe she was sincere in her beliefs...but something about her reaction at the end, when French gives her back to notes, seems to leave a little room for doubt there; that possibly she had another reason for despising French. But that is only interpretation or conjecture. |
