Default AI5: Top 12 Girls: official spoiler/discussion thread

GIRLS SPOILERS:

Quote:
About the set.. and Mandisa's performance: (from KelsAdorkable)
"Mandisa started the show off with a very uptempo song..which was what every singer needs to do if they open a show. Must have audience on their feet...guess it sets the mood. Speaking of set, Idol actually spent money on the set this year. Makes last year look like they pulled it out of the junk yard. Seriously. They have a HUUUUUGE screen right behind the stage, and a staircase leading up to the red room which was completely remodeled as well. Anyway, Mandisa sang a CLASSSIC song by Heart called "Never". Everyone and their dog knows she can sing, and she did exactly that. I expected nothing short of spectacular from her, and I wasn't disappointed. Randy started off by saying " Wow wow wow..what a way to start off the show..that was hot!" Simon said it wasn't a "perfect vocal..particularly in the middle"..but he does think she has a "unbelievably personality" and to basically expect her in the final rounds. So now im questioning WHY I didn't put her in the "top 4"..why did I rank Kellie higher? I honestly don't know....I didn't come out of there with the thought of her on my mind. So that leads me to the likeability factor that complicates thing.. Kellie is more likeable..which, I guess will ultimately hurt Mandisa in the long run. Overall, vocally, probably 4th place..but America might put her 5th."

** Performance Order may not be fully Accurate **

Mandisa :: "Never." (Heart)
Mandisa started it off..she was kinda pitchy in a few parts. I think she was just oversinging, so its not like she couldn't hit the notes. She was pretty good, but I'm not certain if Simon was including her in the top 4 or not. I wouldn't think so. I personally think Kellie took Mandisa's spot in the top 4 even though she was really nervous.

Ayla :: "Reflection." (Christina Aguliera)
Ayla sang "Refection" by Christina Aguilera. Good song...vocally very challenging. But not a smart choice for her, as ambitious as it is. There's no way she could do that song as good as Christina does... BUT, she was good...she didn't butcher it. Randy was pleasantly surprised. Simon thinks she's a "hard worker" and that from singing this song, they've discovered her vocal limits for as how high as she can go (she does crack for a second as she changes to falsetto). He also said for the first time, he saw some emotion in her, which he says is very important since he said in the beginning rounds that she was very robotic. And so this time was more real. Overall, just average for me. Honestly,besides the gap between the top 5 and the rest of the 12.... from 6th place to 10th, everyone is pretty neck to neck. It all just comes down to who is a favorite.

Heather :: "When You Tell Me That You Love Me." (Ai4 Finalists)
Heather Cox sang 'When You Tell Me That You Love Me'...obviously made known by the idols last year. In my opinion, a REALLY crappy song choice. I remember her a little bit from previous rounds, and I had expected her to bring it tonight, and I don't think she did. Simon thought she played it safe, was forgetable, and that her personality evaporated by saying " No one will remember that performance" And to put it frankly, I didn't besides knowing the song choice...I had to listen back to audio that I recorded to even remember if she was good or simply average.

Becky :: "Because the Night." (Patti LaBelle) ?? i think..
This is all I have to say.....Becky is BEAUTIFUL. Phew, okay, glad I got that out! hehe original.gif But really, gorgeous gorgeous woman. She sang "Because Of The Night" by I believe 10,000 Maniacs. Really good song choice...song choice can unfortunately make or break you... and I do believe that this song will get her through to the next round. The judges agreed that she did better than they had imagined she'd do. Simon thinks her vocals were a 6.5/10 and that he doesnt think 'quite good' is good enough in this competition anymore...that you just have to be GREAT. Overall, he thought it was just OK..so I'd probably place her 7th or 8th. I hope she can get better in the weeks to come.

Kellie :: "How Far." (Martina McBride)
KelsAdorkable says she was her 4th favorite of the night. Although she had some pitch problems with the high notes, she was still very good .. and Simon says she is likeable. However, I think her choice was WAY too predictable ... and I really thought it was cheap. (that's me though)

Paris :: "Midnight Train to Georgia."
She says she's great. I think it's a WONDERFUL choice for her. heart.gif In the top 4. (of the night)

Stevie :: "To Where You Are." (Josh Gracin)
Simon says one of the weakest of the night ... a complete utter mess. crying.gif I really hope she stays because she brings something DIFFERENT to the table and doesn't go fully predictable like some people. original.gif

Lisa :: "I'm Changing." (Jennifer Holiday)
Simon says "You made the people 5 and 6 years older than you look ordinary." Basically, she's in the Top 4 of his performances. Spazz.

Brenna :: "You Are the Sunshine of My Life." (Stevie Wonder)
Oh lord..Brenna is SOMETHING ELSE. I swear, for the two hours that they were taping, not once had I looked over at her and she wasn't doing some sort of pose for the camera. She reminds me in a way like Mikalah (very outspoken), except like, 8 years older, hogs the camera, thinks very highly of herself, and isn't exactly fun loving in the nice way that Mikalah is. And despite me basically HATING her, well, she doesnt suck vocally. I hadn't quite figured out WHY Simon likes her personality so much until last night when it was brought to our attention that miss Brenna and Simon Cowell himself have something in common...their BIRTHDATE. I guess October 7th (?) is 'become the next simon' birthdate? I don't know. Anywho..she sang " You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" by Stevie Wonder. Randy basically thought it was a safe performance, and that she needs to stick to her 'attitude performances because that's who she is'. Simon contradicted Paula's comment about needing to eat a little "humble pie" and said that she didn't need to, that she needs to just be who she is because that's what people apparently like about her. However, he thought she did horrible and compared her to a wild cat that was forced into wearing gloves. In the end, It all comes down to what America makes of her. She could be going home Thursday, or maybe not...I wouldn't place her any higher than 9th though. ( based on THAT performance, that is) We'll see what next week brings. I really hope she goes home... she doesn't respect anyone and I think this choice was very very cheap.

Melissa Mcghee ::

Kinnik :: heart.gif heart.gif "Get Here." Oleta Adams -- Danian vickers sang this in Ci3, Group 4 semifinals.
Kinnik is completely new to me. I don't recall her from any previous auditions besides the fact that she was the last woman to make the top 24. She is the second to last woman to perform and she sings "Get Here" by Oleta Adams. Randy thought the middle of the song was really ruff as she was sharp through most of that part. He rated her as a 6/10. Paula said something along the lines of having 2 or 3 pitchy parts at worst, but that she's a classy woman regardless. And she is, as expected for her age. Simon said that her problem isn't the pitchs, its " that we've seen 1 or 2 quite stunning performances from very young girls who we got really excited about....and with somebody like you, who's 28 years old, very elegant, very real...it was a very cabaret (sp?) performance and we've heard this a million times across American Idol. Not once did I sit here and think 'Wow' , where did this girl come from?" So then he basically summed it up and said, " You are being overshadowed by the younger contenders tonight..and that is going to hurt you". My note - Which is why I also overlooked Mandisa, as she IS one of the older contenders. I'm pleased that she did goodish since AI did not give her enough airtime and gave some other poeple camerahogging time. I really hope she stays though. I love this song as well. heart.gif Hopefully she stays though..

Katharine :: "Since I Fell For You." (Barbra Streisand)
Simon says best of the night and she ends the night. Well, that tells it all. Welcome to next week, Katharine. original.gif

I didn't see anything on Melisa McGhee, sorry guys .. but here's all the spoilers I know. Thank you KelsAdorkable for providing these! Remember the performance order is not fully accurate except for Mandisa, Ayla, Kinnik & Katharine

Paris was AMAZING! I went in there looking forward to her performance, and she didn't disappoint. She's incredibly short too, so was not expecting that. But she knew how to work the stage like a pro, I was very impressed...lots of energy. She sang "Midnight Train To Georgia' and in my opinion, had the 3rd best performance of the night. Paula thought she reminded her of Fantasia. Simon said she " had the likeability factor. It's not about being good, it's about being great...and that was great!"

Kellie is just, adorable. I love that she's very "virgin" to everything going on around her. She's taking everything in as much as she can, and she seems very genuinely interested. Every time I looked over at her in the coke room she had her head sticking out over the top of the couch to try and get a look at whatever was going on. But anyway, on to her singing....she sang "How Far" by Martina McBride. I wasn't familiar with the song, but I felt very captivated by it. She was very very nervous, as I have mentioned. She got a tad pitchy on the high notes, but I still think it was overall a very good performance. I hope the tv portrays the performance as it sounded live..because some people unfortunately DO sound different on tv than they do in person. Simon said that she started off better than she ended it..but did mention that however she does "have the likeability factor" and that her song "was important to be heartfelt and it WAS heartfelt..it felt sincere..and that's what we've always liked about you"...she "potentially has a very good voice" and "thought she did very very well'. So for that, I ranked her 4th.

I personally thought Stevie was the worst of all of them. And I promise i'm not being biased. I went in there with an open mind for everyone. She picked an opera song ( 'To Where You Are' by Josh Groban? )and sang most of it in her falsetto (and possibly out of tune). It just wasn't all that good. I wouldn't be surprised if she went home Thursday. Simon said " I think you completely and utterly messed that up".

Lisa Lisa Lisa...she is just this adorable, small framed, poised 16 year old. I LOVE her. In my opinion, the second best performance of the night! ( Her mom even cried - soo cute!) She sang, "I'm Changing" by Jennifer Holiday. Lots and lots of additude and control in this song..showed off a side I hadn't completely seen before from her. Simon said "she made the girls who are 5 or 6 years older than her look ordinary".
