Just wondering how approving everyone's parents are of certain decisions they make. Are they rather supportive or not?
I'm getting a tattoo tomorrow and my parents are completely against it and have tried to force their opinions on me about it (I know where they're coming from and I really appreciate it, but I just think I should make my own decisions, without interference from other people). It's always been like this...with the whole vegetarian thing (which they were convinced was just a "phase" five years ago), to my grades (they pretty much didn't let me go out a lot during high school because they were worried it would take time away from my studies. My studies were fine but I regret not hanging out with my friends as much, especially now that we're all at different colleges, experiencing different things...it's just not the same anymore) to where I went to college to what my major is/will be. And the fact that they can guilt trip me into doing anything that they want me to...ah! It just feels like I'm doing things for them more than I am for myself most of the time and I'm just sick of it. It's my life, so can I just live my life the way I want to so that when I look back I'll know it was my choice? And if I look back and think it wasn't the best choice, oh well..at least I'll have done it on my own, even if it turned out to be not so genius of me, you know? Ahh...sorry if this sounds so teenage rantish but it's not. What are your parents like when it comes to your life/decisions? |

my parents are spazzes. but i'm at the point right now where i'm not making any real major decisions. i'm just in the process of enjoying my first real relationship i've ever had with a boy that's almost 4 years older than me so they're just like "yeah dont have sex" and yell at me a lot about that. and they don't get on my case about my studies anymore because i got so sick of them bugging me that i keep my grades A's all the time. i don't really hang out with my friends that much and never really have that many problems. so they're usually pretty chill.

Mild Approval to Moderate Criticism depending on the circumstances.. I tend to be a bit more unorthodox about things, and make choices - most about money - that most wouldn't

My mom still tries to control things when I am at home because I think she's convinced that if she isn't constantly reminding me not to have sex that I will end up pregnant and "ruin" my life. Or last year when I got my belly button pierced and she found out and all but ripped the thing right out. I guess it's one of those "my house, my rules" type of thing because she hardly cares at all what I do when I'm at school.

unfortunately I'm stuck in this poor college student phase, so while I have my fredoms while I'm over here, I'm still obligated to call often, come home every once in a while, do this, do that, etc. This is why I'm looking foward to graduating and finally getting a good paying job. (instead of bouncing around with this part time garbage) plus, I'm leaving the state once I graduate, so that will give me even more independance.

My mother rarely approved or supported anything I did, very controlling, wanted things her way, never wanted to discuss anything. Just a few of the reasons why we no longer speak.

My parents are 99% of the time supportive of my decisions. They were supportive when I (like you) became a vegetarian, they were supporting when in the third grade of 'high school' (as you would call it) I had to choose a certain 'profile' (there are four 'profiles' with other subjects/more or less hours on certain subjects)for the next two years (that's the way it works over here), and they were supportive when I picked the college I wanted to go to. Also, they never gave me a hard time about going out or studying. They trusted me and I haven't proven them not worth the trust.

Let's put it this way...I'm usually wrong and my parents are usually right (and no, I'm not being snotty...I really do seem to make bad decisions). So I listen to them more than to myself.
And I guess I've never really done anything they'd disapprove of because I don't recall anything. My mom knew I'd hate going to college 2 hours away, but she sent me off to learn from my own mistake. And I did. |

She just thinks I'm young and stupid and will screw up or something. She always refers to sex as "being bad."
