Why did the Chief slap the daughters around? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Was the Chief really a bully? Did he slap the girls because that was his way of discipline? Maybe he was still unhinged from his wife's death? If he really was a chauvenistic bully I would've wanted to leave too.

A lot of parents back in the day did the same thing. I know my mom did from time to time...not that I agree with hitting kids but that was the norm back then. Now it's seen as a form of child abuse.

I know the Chief slapped Katie in "Katie the Crook". Did he ever slap any of his daughters again? It's been a while since I've seen a lot of the episodes so I don't remember.

I think he slapped Julie when he caught her smoking in Season 2.

That was the way it was done back then. I got slapped a few times and was threatened with a belt although I never actually got hit by it. I think it was more of a threat. I know kids who did though.
