Is being depressed about not having a Valentine only a Teenage Thing? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I was wondering does that-"I'm sad because I don;t have a Valentine" kind of fade away when you reach the age of 20? I mean i used to be sad on VD when i was in 9th grade but for someone to be depressed about not having a valentine in their 20's seems silly to me. What do you think?

well i'm 23 and it unfortunately seems to be worse every year

I don't think it is a teenage thing. When you're alone, you are alone. Some people are happy about being alone, others get depressed.

At work there used to be female employees who would cry all day on Valentine's Day because they didn't have a sweetheart. Other women would have flowers, balloons, or something delivered to work from their boyfriends and husbands, and that would just fuel the fire. Eventually most of these women took VD off as a personal paid holiday.

I can understand adults being sad on Valentine's Day. Many are sad over relationships that didn't work out or just not finding someone.

Everywhere you look -- stores, tv, print ads, radio -- it's all about love and couples on Valentine's Day. There's no escaping it.

I feel the same way on Mother's Day since my mother passed away. There's a two to three week buildup for the big day. Everyone's talking about what they're doing for their mother.

It's not easy sitting on the sidelines seeing others so happy about something when you can't participate, be it Valentine's Days, Mother's Day, Father's Day, birthdays...or any holiday for that matter. Some people have no family or loved ones to spend any holiday together.

well since i work with 85% men i don;t have to see anything like that

Yeah i guess as long as you don;t see anything Valentine's Day related you are ok, like today I'm at work so I don;t expect to see any valentine day ballons or anything because i work with all men. then I will go home and that will be it. But it was different in highschool because they had Valentine's day Dances and u had no choice but to be sad because it was all up in your face-lol

I thought I was OK with it (I'm 23), but apparently I'm a little more sad than I thought. Mostly it's from the regret of not being with someone right now...makes it even more depressing for me.

I think that if there weren't constant reminders and all these ads didn't act like if you don't have someone to buy you flowers/candy/jewelry/whatever, then you can't participate and you're a loser. Which is awful. I was at the store yesterday picking up a last minute VD card, and they had cards for friends, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers....not just sweethearts. But do they advertise those? Not really.

I'd like to think that everybody has at least one person that they can say loves them, so they should celebrate that instead of getting all mopey about some dumb chocolate/card company holiday.
