Katey Sagal to Host
Nick at Nite's Search for the Funniest Mom in America 2 Network Reveals the Ten Finalists Competing for the Crown Santa Monica, CA, February 13, 2006 - Nick at Nite announced today that actress Katey Sagal (Married...with Children, 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter) will host Nick at Nite's Search for the Funniest Mom in America 2. Additionally, the network revealed the names of the ten moms selected to compete for this year's crown. The competition - a five-part reality series -- debuts on Tuesday, April 4 at 10 p.m. (all times ET/PT). The series airs at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT beginning Tuesday, April 11 and will culminate with an hour-long finale in which one winner is chosen on Tuesday, May 9 from 9:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. (ET/PT). "Katey Sagal is the perfect choice to host this year's Search for the Funniest Mom," explains Sal Maniaci, Senior Vice President, Development and Production, TV Land and Nick at Nite. "Synonymous for her roles playing such memorable moms on two hit comedies, her talent and humor are sure to resonate with these moms as well as our viewers." In this five-part elimination series, Nick at Nite follows the ten finalists as they live together in a penthouse suite in New York City. During their stay in New York, they receive surprise visits from celebrity guests and the series' host -- Katey Sagal -- and compete in a variety of comedic challenges, each underscoring the contestants' talents and personalities. The moms, divided into teams, tackle everything from entertaining an audience of kids to actual street performances in New York City to a sitcom screen test challenge. The weakest performers on each challenge will face off against each other in a head-to-head stand-up comedy battle. Over the course of the series, 5 moms will be eliminated and the five remaining will compete in the show's finale, performing stand-up comedy in front of an audience of hundreds. The winner will be awarded $50,000, the chance to develop her own show for Nick at Nite and host a special night of programming on the network. Darlene Westgor, who was crowned "The Funniest Mom in America" for 2005, has been paired by Nick at Nite with renown comic and screenwriter Carol Leifer (Seinfeld, The Larry Sanders Show) for a pilot that is based on Westgor's life as a single mom living and working in Minnesota. Leifer recently spent time with Westgor in her home to immerse herself into Westgor's life to help shape the network's untitled pilot, which will be shot in Los Angeles in spring 2006. Following are the 10 moms competing for the title of The Funniest Mom in America: Name: Lisa Alvarado Hometown: Los Angeles, CA Name: Paula Bel Hometown: Los Angeles, CA Name: Nellie Coes Hometown: Portland, ME Name: Sherry Davey Hometown: Brooklyn, NY Name: Just Jay Hometown: Denver, CO Name: Donna Lee McBride Hometown: Austin, TX Name: Angela Montgomery Hometown: Cincinnati, OH Name: Donna Murray Hometown: St. Louis, MO Name: Rubi Nicholas Hometown: Denver, CO Name: Christine Stedman Hometown: St. Louis, MO After receiving hundreds of entries from moms around the country, Nick at Nite narrowed its selection down to twenty-one women. The women were chosen to perform at the semi-finals in January 2006 at New York City's Laugh Factory, where the final ten moms were selected to appear in the reality series. Katey Sagal has entertained audiences in a variety of dramatic and comedic roles throughout her career. She recently wrapped her parts in the independent film I'm Reed Fish and the tele-film 3 Wise Guys, and appeared as "Helen" on the television phenomenon Lost. With the support of record label Valley Entertainment, she released her album, "Room," in early June. "Room" is the first record for Sagal since her 1994 debut, "Well." "Room" is a combination of original songs penned by Sagal including "Life Goes Round", "Daddy's Girl" and "Wish I Were a Kid" and memorable classics like "Feel a Whole Lot Better" and "(For the Love of) Money". Sagal gained national attention for her role as the outrageous 'Peg Bundy' in the ground-breaking, highly-rated long-running series Married...with Children, for which she earned three Golden Globe(r) and two American Comedy Award nominations. Most recently, Sagal starred in the ABC series 8 Simple Rules..., the NBC series Tucker, the television movie God's New Plan and as the voice of Leela, a beautiful one-eyed alien, in the animated series Futurama. Nick at Nite Originals was created in 2003 to develop original programming that meets what the network refers to as the "Four F's" criteria: programming that is Family-Friendly, Funny and Familiar. Nick at Nite Originals produces Fatherhood (June 2004), a show based on Bill Cosby's best-selling book of the same name. Nick at Nite also produced Hi-Jinks, the network's hidden-camera series in which adults play good-natured pranks on kids of all ages, which returns to the network in its second season in February 2006. And last May, Darlene Westgor was crowned "The Funniest Mom in America" when the network aired Nick at Nite's Search for the Funniest Mom in America, which returns for a second season in April 2006.
