Default Chemistry

A discussion brought up in the Memories of Moonlighting thread got me thinking about a question... thought I'd throw it out there. In terms of the chemistry between M/C and B/D, was it stronger at certain points in the run? Weaker at others? What do you guys think?

I always thought the "heat" sort of waned in Season 5, not really because of the writing or ATROCIOUS plotlines... just that spark between the actors didn't seem to be there as much. Never understood why, but that's what I saw. Thoughts?

I agree re season 5 but until a couple opf years ago I had not watched seasons 1, 2 or 3 and there was still enough chemistry in seasons 4 and 5 to get me hooked and come back for more all these years later

Definitely season 5........the characters were poorly written and it showed. I always describe it as if the 5th season writers had never seen an episode of Moonlighting in their lives.

There were a few tiny sparks...but definitely no fire.

I wasn`t referring to the characters chemistry i was referring to the actors chemistry .I dont think it would have mattered how badly the scripts may have been written or how badly the characters had been portrayed and change i think the` heat` was there from start to finish. But hey thats just my opinion.By the way `good thread!`

Since Moonlighting was a TV show, I think that the writing is the main basis for whether the characters will exhibit chemistry. Many a good pairing has been ruined by the material they have had to perform.

I think that trying to explain the quality of this show by saying that the actors must have had a personal relationship insults their talents and acting ability.

I realize that many people think this is romantic.....in my opinion, it is just gossip.

Season 5 the characters are barely visable. There are a few bright spots for the characters but other than that ZIP. It was the writers fault for not putting in enough chemistry scenes for them. When put in Bruce and Cybill shined without it what else could they do but act what they were given. It is very unfortunate because when given those scenes they were always sparks even in InsnOutlaws. Even though it wasn't Maddie and David persay they were still hot on camera in the 2nd to last episode. Don't know how the writers couldn't see it and end the last episode with them together but thats another story.

I think i have been misunderstood , i wasn`t implying that for the chemistry to have worked as well as it did then B & C must have had a personal relationship,i woudn`t dream of implying something that had no proof. But having said that in regards to the chemistry between them , it wasn`t the scripts that made it .that came from their own personal feelings towards one another and thats not just my opinion even B & C have said this themselves.

Moonlighting never would have been what it was if different actors had been cast as Maddie and David. The chemistry between them is what made the show. The writing made it even better, but even when they didn't get great scripts in Season 5, I can still enjoy watching them together. (At least, until Annie shows up!)

Hi, iv`e just remembered ( well i think so) two great chemistry scenes from Season 4 .Their were, i think from the episode `Eek A Spouse` the first scene that comes to mind is the car scene where Maddie is trying to get David to open up his feelings and tell her how he feels about her being married and she gives this big monologue on why it wouldn`t have worked for David and her and that what they have is something unique and nothing she has ever experienced before and thats why she a little frightened of how strong her feelings are towards David, CHEMISTRY ,its in her voice , her face ,his face and their reactions to one another . The other one ,the one that i like the best is the scene at the end after the chase when they are both sitting on the bed . When David tells Maddie to put her ring on and slips it on her finger himself its like `magic`everything we wanted for them is in that one little gesture , again its in the looks they give to each other ,their tone of voice. Its not so much what they say but more HOW they say it that screams chemistry to me .It always brings a tear to my eye and a lump to my throat when ever i watch that end scene!

Thanks, Laura. Bruce has been saying lately that his "chemistry" with Mos Def in "16 Blocks" is something like on Moonlighting! Sorry, Bruce! I think it was a LITTLE different with Cybill!

Ditto. It was a little creepy to hear him talk about the chemistry being similar.

I've read a few things that have made me wonder how much of an appreciation Bruce really had for his chemistry with Cyb. I read something where he insisted that chemistry, like the type he had with Cybill, COULD be faked.

That said, I'll be curious to see if he and Mos Def "melt plexiglass."

You made me spill my coffee.
Good one.

I sheepishly ask: "By the way, who is Mos Def?" (I am running and hiding because all I know about him is that he is starring with Bruce in 16 Blocks).
