BLIZZARD OF 2006
(STATE COLLEGE) -- AccuWeather.com is forecasting the winter storm that has moved into the Mid-Atlantic will develop into a full-blown blizzard by tonight. The leading edge of the system has already moved into Virginia, and snow has begun to fall in Washington D.C and the surrounding area. Senior Meteorologist Gerald Mohler says the timetable for the storm's arrival in the major cities of the Northeast has slowed slightly. AccuWeather.com is now forecasting the following arrival times:
Mohler says this storm is still a fast moving system, expecting it will last for ten to twelve hours before moving on. That will mean that snow will fall at the rate of 1-2" per hour in the areas where the heaviest snowfall is forecast. According to Mohler there is a possibility the region from east of Washington/Baltimore through southern and central New Jersey could receive more than the forecast 6-12", perhaps as much as 15 or 16 inches. Despite the small deviation in the timing of the storm, the target path of its core has not changed. The major cities along the I-95 corridor are still in the crosshairs of the heaviest snowfall forecast from this storm system.
Once the system reaches the Atlantic coast it will tap into the enormous energy stored in the atmosphere over the mild ocean water. That energy could cause a rapid intensification of the storm later tonight, creating the blizzard conditions along the coast to the north and east of New York City. Mohler is forecasting 35-40 mph winds with higher gusts will create blinding, windswept conditions across southern and eastern New England overnight tonight and into Sunday. This storm will lead to widespread travel problems across the Northeast. Behind the system, lake effect snow will develop across the southern Great Lakes. According to Mohler there has been minor snowfall overnight to the south of Lake Ontario, along the I-90 corridor between Buffalo and Rochester NY. By Sunday there will be lake effect snow to the lee of Lake Erie. Snow has also been falling in Chicago, and more is forecast for today. While most of the snowfall behind the storm will be small compared to the amounts along the East Coast, the combination of snow and wind will create bands of hazardous driving conditions. Travelers can expect numerous flight delays and cancellations at the major airports in the Northeast, as airport crews attempt to keep runways open and planes de-iced. Any delays or cancellations will have a domino effect at other airports around the country. AccuWeather.com is forecasting this storm will have a longer lasting impact than just the snow it will deposit on the Northeast. In effect, this system will open up the gates that have been holding back the Arctic air for most of the past two months. The very cold air will funnel south, by the middle of next week it will reach the Central Plains, and even Texas and the Deep South will feel the chill. The Winter Center meteorologists are forecasting that the second half of February could be as cold as any February we have experienced in quite some time. The bitter cold that is forecast for the remainder of this month also has the potential to create a number of winter storms. Right now it is too soon to forecast if they will be as potent as this weekend's storm, but certainly they will bring more snow than the country saw over the first half of this winter. [/LEFT] |

I'm expecting to see some HUGE accumulations from this storm in the Boston Area and the Suburbs of NYC, I wouldn't be suprised to see 20 inches fall in spots, possibly more. NYC is probably going to see wind gusts nearing 60 mph. That combined with snow falling at 3 inches per hour (and in some cases more) is going to make a mess. Visibility would be about 25-50 feet. Same for the coastal areas of Massachusetts.

I love snow.
That being said, they had originally forcasted up to 7 inches here, but we only got 3...and with a few exceptions, that was grass-only (IE: Not on roads) |

Last night I started making preparations for the blizzard.
Okay, actually I went out and got drunk, but at the bar I made a list of things I have to do today to prepare for the massive snowfall. 1. DVDs from Blockbuster 2. Groceries 3. Something to read If things get really bad, I plan on using my roommate as firewood.

12 inches plus coming here! It's about time. December was a good month (12 inches plus). January was pathetic (1-2 inches).

I don't get what is all the love for snow? It is extremely dangerous if you have to drive in it and who likes shoveling snow? I guess for kids it is ok because you can skip school, but for an adult, it should suck royally.
