hi, went thirft store "mining" last week and found some "gold" in dem dar hills. found several vhs videotapes not labeled just numbered. so i decided to get them. i have looked thru mostof them and found what i think is some good stuff. there are several classic movies like the original king kong, song of king kong, bride of frankestien, etc. some documentaries on movie palaces, jack benny from hbo, jewish humor, etc. episosdes of simpsons, married with children, etc that seem to be original airings. eps from hbo of not necsessarily the news, 1st and ten, etc. most of the programs also include the commericals. so i suggest "mining" the local thirft shops, yard sales, flea markets, etc. you'll never know what you might find. thanks

hi, vhs transfers to me are not that bad. especially when alot of stuff was first recorded on tape. alot of this stuff is not going to be found on discs unless it has been transferred from tape. i like dvds just like any other, but with rare stuff give me the vhs transfers and i'll live with the quality. leave the tape mining to those of us who enjoy rarities. thanks

oh no!
i hope you didn'T take that in the wrong context? i too have some rare stuff that came from VHS because that was the ONLY way possible. just now adays, all we seem to read on boards is how bad of quality so and so recieved in a trade. i agree with you 100%. if you want something that rare then YES you will have to sacrifice quality. some folks expect ALL dvd's to be retail perfection. |

Well I think it depends a lot on the persons experience, and the equipment. I have the 24 disk Looney Tunes DVD set that was transferreed from Laser Disk, I am reauthoring it an adding a 25th disk that contains cartoons not on the original laser disk set from a VHS tape I found at Goodwill. The quality is suprisingly good and hopefully Iwill be able to make it better. If you have an Odd lots near you I have found some rare movies there also.

If you wanna be real picky, then even direct from cable/satellite to disc isn't perfect. Compression still isn't as good as it should be.

Thrift store hunting at places like Goodwill and Salvation Army can turn up some gold. I bought some Newhart and Rhoda pre-record tapes and sold them for a nice price on Ebay.
