Question Have any major network affiliates gone independent?

I read once that television station WFND 47 out of Findlay, Ohio, was a UPN affiliate in 2003. According to http://www.tvradioworld.com it is no longer affiliated with this network and is now an A1 affiliate. Plus, it is at 22 on the dial instead of 47.

Have any other stations gone this route? I would guess that there will likely be more UPN and WB affiliates turned independents because of the merger.

They're have been a few in recent years, the biggest examples are KTVK (former ABC) in Phoenix, became an indie in 1995; KRON (former NBC) in San Francisco, went indie in 2002, after a nasty dispute between KRON's owner Young Broadcasting and NBC because of an affilliation agreement; WJXT (former CBS) in Jacksonville, Florida, also because of an affilliation dispute (but less nastier than the KRON-NBC decable).

I live in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area and I remember in March 1979 there was a major affiliate shuffle when KSTP switched from NBC to ABC and WTCN (now KARE), an independent became an NBC affiliate. KMSP, which was an ABC affiliate was left out in the cold and became an independent.

The WWOR channel 9 will be going independant very soon. It used to be a UPN affiliate.

In 1996, WTTO-TV in Birmingham went from being a FOX station to a WB station. Also at the same time, WBRC-TV went from being the ABC station to the FOX station and a new station, ABC 33/40 became the ABC station. It now rules the market in the ratings.

It means it has no network affiliation. If it's not an ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, WB, UPN, PBS affiliate, then(for the most part), it's independent.

Yes! WWOR-TV is going to be independent this fall. WPIX-TV is not going to be independent anytime soon. I remember WPIX-TV was independent before WB came along 11 years ago. It's not going to happen. WB is going to become CW on WPIX-TV in the fall.

KCOP is going independent this fall and it seems like everybody in the business is excited about that for some reason.

KCOP is so disgusted by UPN (or CW) that it has COMPLETELY taken out the UPN logo from anything affiliated KCOP. They don't even promote the network's shows anymore. :\

WPWR in Chicago will be independant again. Fox has destroyed that station, and now without UPN, there is no reason to watch it at all. Will probably be a paid programming haven.
