The Demise of the Classic Cartoons Discussion

As I have been reading, in these posts Boomerang is going to stop airing classic Warner Bros. cartoons. This makes me absolutely sad, not just the fact that these are going to stop being played, but also that they are baiscally depriving a whole generation of children of something wonderful (and yes I realize that these films were made for adults). And its not just Turner/Warner, its all of these guys: Viacom, Columbia, Disney (the Disney Channel doesn't even show any classic Disney material, or they rarely do, instead they show the Hillary Duff garbage used to stupidify Middle Schoolers). I can remember back when I was in elementary school, the highlight of my day was not just playing "Super Mario Bros." on my Super NES, but watching classic "Looney Tunes" and Disney cartoons. Every Day I would come home from school and later on in the day Day-Care, and I could not wait to watch "Donald Duck's Quack Attack", "Mickey Mouse's Mouse Tracks", and "Looney Tunes on Nickelodeon". Now don't get me wrong DVD's are absolutly wonderful, but the whole fun of these cartoon shows was you (meaning me as a child) never knew which cartoon the show was going to play next. When a "Road Runner & Wile E. Coyote" cartoon or a "Donald Duck Vs. Chip & Dale" cartoon came on it was always a wonderful moment in my day. Not to say that DVD's suck or anything, its just not as fun knowing what you are going to see, its more fun when it is a surprise.

My personal feelings are that these corporations need to cut the crap, and put out decent some family entertainment, that everyone, not just kids can enjoy. I know when I have children I do not want to watch cheaply produced trash-o-rama such as "Dexter's Laboratory", "Ed Edd & Eddy" (those character designs of those guys are absolutely dispicable), other new Disney cheap garbage, I want to watch with my children classic Donald Duck cartoons and hilarious "Looney Tunes", which have not only enlightened my life, but have steered me in the direction that I want to choose my major in (in college) and conquer: Film History or film Production. I beleive that there is something magical in these old cartoons that 98% of new cartoon shows are lacking, and in this day and age, we need something wonderful and magical.

Any thoughts?

You should get DVD's of cartoons old and new including the Disney Treasures Sets like the "Chrological Donald" Vol. 1, 2 & 3, "Mickey Mouse: In Living Color" sets, the "Looney Tunes Golden Collection" sets as well as the "Movie Collection" and $1.00 DVD's filled with PD cartoons.

i have golden collections by looney tunes vol 1 & 2....i need 3

the movie collection would be nice too..they only have 1 volume right??? i saw 2 movies on that dvd set....1001 rabbit tales and i cant think of the other right now....bugs bunny/roadrunner movie?

The last line of your post, Musicradio77, I don't want to take chances on a PD (Public Domain) cartoon collection due to the poor quality, color deteriation and scratches seen on the cartoons often. I wouldn't mind shelling out some extra bucks for restored cartoon collections you mentioned in your earlier posts that are of much higher quality, cleaner, sharper images vivid colors and excellent sound quality the best possible.

I'm for more cartoon releases on DVD and I agree with your post regarding the sad state of some golden cartoons might be shelved on Boomerang. Let's face it, I watched Cartoon Network for the 'golden oldies' of my childhood, just like what GSN (Game Show Network) was when they began in 1994 as an all classic game show channel and it was 'heaven-sent' 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!

Forget waiting for the 'toons' on broadcast or cable, the collections on DVD are your best bet and you can literally watch an episode or a cartoon short day or night, any time of year!!

I agree with you on The Disney Channel when I believed it catered more to the younger children with a more, wholesome approach with a schedule to start off with the pre-schoolers, kindergartner's, grade school, and teens throughout the day, later a 'family prime-time', or something to that extent and classic movies for adults in the late night/overnight hours.

I, too, used to come home every day from school and watch those timeless classics from Warner Bros., MGM and the other major studios who made those great cartoons, or if I was not in school (sick days or holiday vacations), game shows would be the order of the day, all day till around 3:00pm or 4:00pm. I can remember "The Flintstones' would air at 5:00pm on KTTV channel 11 and it was one of a few cartoons that would air in the early evening hours.


I would love to see the great cartoons live on from generation to generation. There were some of the best animation ever aired in history, now it's time to pass it on!
