Default Cases that you were glad UM didn't profile

Countless stories have had potential to be seen on UM, but never were. Either they were rejected, or were never under consideration at all. There can be a variety of reasons for this. It could be that any claims of it being a mystery were false. Another could be that it was solved before the UM people even had a chance to consider doing a segment on it. Or maybe it was too controversial to be considered for the show.

My question is: Are there any particular cases that you think UM had the good sense not to feature?

I would say the Susan Smith case and her bogus claims that a black man carjacked her and took off with her car only to find out she murdered her own kids and unthinkably watched them sink into the water.

I'm surprised UM never did anything on the JonBenet Ramsey case..

thats arguably the most bizarre murder mystery of all time!

On the contrary, they did. It was shown on NBC in early 1997, but it was never rerun on Lifetime.

I stand corrected Kane, i had no idea!

It seemed that for a long time, the parents, especially the mother was strongly suspected of the murder but i gather now theres a school of thought that they were innocent all along...any recent developments?

Well, DNA has ruled out the parents. But the case is still far from solved.

By the way, judging from the content of your initial post, it seems to me that you misinterpreted this thread as being about cases that "should have" been featured. In fact, I only asking my fellow UM board members if there were any particular cases they were glad that UM didn't profile.

If you are apologetic, then apology accepted.

I seem to recall that the 1996/7 season had a few segments on highly publicized and/or recent cases, when they typically tackled cases that were turning cold due to inactivity of the leads.

Aside from JonBenet, I recall in early 1997 they had a short segment on the Ennis Cosby murder, when the case was only a few weeks old and the murderer still unidentified. Also in 1996 or 1997 Keely Shaye Smith did a segment on a BC girl's murder which happened only a few months previous, and it was big news around the province at the time (so you'd think I could remember the girl's name!!). The guy made a call to 911 bragging about it and until UM ran the segment, I had never heard the tape of the call, as the local news never played it until the murderer's arrest.

Well, it was never unusual for UM to air cases that were less than a year old, even before the 1996-97 season. In fact, for example, the segment about the murder of Dan Short (the Missouri bank president) aired in the spring of 1990, less than six months after the murder occurred.
