UPN, WB to Shut Down; New Network Formed

Two small, struggling television networks, UPN and WB, will shut down this fall, and their parent companies plan to form a new network called The CW using programming and other assets from each of them.

The announcement was made Tuesday by executives from CBS Corp., which owns UPN, and Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc., which owns most of WB.

Both UPN and WB had struggled to compete against larger rivals in the broadcast TV business, including Walt Disney Co.'s ABC, News Corp.'s Fox, General Electric Co.'s NBC and CBS Corp.'s CBS.

The new network will launch in the fall, the executives said, when both UPN and WB will shut down. It will be a 50-50 partnership between Warner Bros. and CBS, and the network will be carried on stations owned by the Tribune Co., a minority owner of WB.

Altogether, the 16 Tribune stations and the 12 UPN stations owned by CBS will give the new network coverage in almost half of the country, the executives said. The executives said they hoped to sign up new affiliates in the rest of the country by the time The CW launches.

Among the Tribune's TV stations that will join the new network are its flagship WGN in Chicago as well as WPIX in New York, and KTLA in Los Angeles. The Tribune Co. will relinquish its 22.5 percent stake in WB and will receive a 10-year affiliation agreement with the new network.

Leslie Moonves, chief executive of CBS Corp., said the new network will air 30 hours of programming seven days a week aimed in part at young audiences.

The plan includes two hours of programs in prime time each night Monday through Friday and three hours on Sunday evening. It will also offer programming on weekday and Sunday afternoons, and five hours of children's programs on Saturday morning.

Barry Meyer, the head of Warner Bros., said the network would be run by the current executives of UPN and WB.

The CW will be run by Dawn Ostroff, who will be in charge of programming, and John Maatta will oversee the business side as chief operating officer. Maatta had been COO of WB, and Ostroff was president of UPN.

The new network gets its name from the first letters of its parent's names C for CBS and W for Warner Bros.

CBS shares rose 86 cents, or 3.3 percent, to $26.68 in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange, while Time Warner shares rose 15 cents to $17.24.

I found a little more info on USA Today.com This is not the entire article but it does address some of the shows.

Executives say they will broadcast every evening except Saturday, blending the most popular programs that UPN and WB now offer.

Top shows include WB's Smallville, 7th Heaven, Beauty and the Geek, Reba, and Gilmore Girls, and UPN's Veronica Mars, Everybody Hates Chris and Girlfriends.

CW also will air WWE Smackdown wrestling, now on UPN.

The new network will target young adults, particularly women. "This is a tough to reach demographic," says Warner Bros. Entertainment CEO Barry Meyer. "It's a pretty appealing (ad) buy for a movie company."

Uh oh. I didn't see Eve and All Of Us on that list of the shows that this new network is gonna broadcast so these 2 shows might get cancelled. I didn't see One On One on the list either. I don't like One On One anymore anyway so i could care less if it got cancelled.

All of Us
Love Inc.
Cuts

Everybody Hates Chris and Girlfriends seem to be a lock for the CW, and if they need another comedy, I dare say Eve would be it.

The pattern with sitcoms that go 3 years on UPN and WB has been to keep them going so that they can get into syndication. Eve could go that route, I think more so than All of Us, which I am surprised is still on the air at all. One on One would've probably gotten cancelled regardless of this new CW network. Half and Half could get cancelled, but it'll have enough episodes for syndication in September. Cuts seems like a waste of airtime. Love Inc seems cancel worthy as well. I wouldn't be surprised either way about Eve.

With a lot of independent stations coming out of this CW merger, what are the chances that some of these shows might continue in first run syndication?

Well, this is some interesting piece of info. I can't wait to see how they do everything in the fall.

I like Eve the best, then G-Friends & 1/2 & 1/2 equally. I watch All of Us, but if it went off the air tomorrow, I wouldn't cry about it. One on One never interested me.

I would wager that this is the last season. Eve and JT will probably get married in the end. I suspect that One on One, All of Us and Half and Half will also end this season and they will all end the same way- the various lead couples in each show will get together- the end. They're all very predictable. Is there are a will they or won't they couple on either Love Inc or Cuts? If so they'll probably hook them up too.
