Default Is something missing here?

In the episode where Esther and Woody get their son, after Daniel comes to get Lamont to take him back to the home, Lamont gets Fred to leave the room so he can talk to Daniel. Fred then goes into the kitchen and blows the bugal and then it cuts to Fred in the kitchen chopping celery. He then stops chopping, takes a piece of celery and goes into the living room. When he does that the audience laughs and some clap. It has always looked to me like something is missing in that. Why does Fred blow the bugal? Why does he stop chopping? And what is funny?

I don't know if you saw that on the DVD or TVLand, but in case you don't know, while Fred is in the kitchen, he makes this HUGE salad. Then, I guess because he didn't like the dressing, he throws the whole thing in the trash! Then he tries to make another salad, but cuts his finger trying to slice a tomato. So he gives up on it and takes a celery stalk instead. This is what the audience was laughing about. Then he goes back in the living room. Some of that laughing apparently didn't die out yet while he went back.

I believe the writers probably didn't quite have enough stuff in this episode, so they added some stuff in to kill time, like making the salad and the stuff where he tries to sell the bugle.
