Default SNL 2/4/06, Steve Martin hosts and Prince is the musical guest

Big news, on the Febuary 4th episode of Saturday Night Live, Steve Martin returns to host SNL after a long absent, and Prince is the musical guest.

This is big. I can't wait till it airs. Last time Prince was the musical guest on SNL (excluding his SNL 15th Anniversery appearance) Charles Rocket said the F word. And we all know what histroy Martin has on SNL.

Only thing, that would make it better, is if Dan Akroyd comes back and do the wild and crazy guy characters, and for one song Prince reunites with the Revolution.

Steve Martin & Prince on Saturday Night Live
Source: NBC January 19, 2006

NBC's Saturday Night Live pulls out the stops on its sole February broadcast with two legendary performers - Steve Martin and Prince (LIVE, February 4, 11:30 p.m. - 1:00 a.m.).

Steve Martin, who stars in the upcoming The Pink Panther, returns to Studio 8H for his record-solidifying 14th hosting appearance. The award-winning actor, comedian, author, playwright and producer's hosting stints have left an indelible impact on SNL's 30-year history. With recurring characters like as the "Wild and Crazy" Czech Festrunk brothers, each Steve Martin-hosted show is an event unto itself.

Martin is joined by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and musical superstar - Prince. Arguably one of the most acclaimed and influential musicians of the 20th century, Prince makes his first appearance on the show since 1981.

I wonder if Prince would partake in a "Prince Show" sketch with Fred Armisen. That would be wild.

Unfortunately, as recent shows have shown, a good host and a good musical guest can't make up for poor writing and weak skits.

Then again, Steve Martin isn't the edgy, cool comedic actor he used to be. Cheaper By The Dozen II?? Give me a break!!

Knowing Prince, it wouldn't surprise me if he did that. That would be fun.

Default Fred Armisen Interview

I just found an interview with Fred Armisen. Ironically both Prince and Steve Martin are mentioned. The entire interview can be seen here: http://avclub.com/content/node/44289 I just included the Prince and Steve Martin segments below:

Interviewed by Amelie Gillette
January 11th, 2006

The A.V. Club: You're on iTunes Music Store's Celebrity Playlist. Want to talk about any of your music selections? You have Prince in there...

Fred Armisen: Prince is my favorite ever. I've liked Prince since... It's been a really long time. Even in junior high. I used to only like punk for a while, and I had all these rules for what kinds of groups were cool, and who was not cool, but as soon as I saw this one Prince video... It just broke all those rules. I was like, "I love this no matter what." It didn't fit into all the wearing black and camouflage and stuff, but I was like, "This is amazing."

AVC: Have you heard anything from Prince about your impression of him? Is he offended?

FA: Well, the impression I do is all complimentary. I don't do it as an insult or to make fun of him. I do it because I wanna meet him some day. There's gotta be some way to meet him. If I do a sketch about him on TV, that's an angle at least, where I can go to Paisley Park and go, "Look."

But I heard from Paisley Park. They sent an email to me. It was really nice. And it was very mysterious. It was like, "We just wanted to tell you that we enjoy "The Prince Show" very much..." All the pronouns were "we." But it was this official thing saying, "It's okay."

AVC: Did you really do "The Prince Show" because you thought it was a good way to meet Prince?

FA: Yes. Absolutely. Also because I'm a Prince fan. But that was one of the angles. Sometimes when you have a reason like that, it makes you work a little bit harder. I feel the same way about Steve Jobs. I'm a big Steve Jobs fan.

AVC: How do you see your career-path going?

FA: I want to have a body of work as varied as Peter Sellers'.

AVC: He's your career model?

FA: Definitely. I like the different kinds of roles he did, and that seems like a good way to go. Even up 'til his death, all his characters were interesting.

AVC: Are you jealous of Steve Martin because he got Sellers' role in the Pink Panther?

FA: I'm highly jealous of Steve Martin. That's bull.... [Laughs.] I called the studio, I asked them to red-light that project. I said, "Don't release it." And they said, "Who is this?" And I said, "This is Fred Armisen." And they go, "Who is that?" And I said, "I'm from Saturday Night effing Live. New York City. NBC. Maybe you've heard of it?" And they said, "This is coming out springtime." I said, "It's not. Red-light it. Chill for a minute. Hold off, and re-release one of his older movies. Like Cheaper By The Dozen! You'll make a billion dollars on that. People have seen it, they liked it, they'll see it again." And they said, "Why would we do that?" And I said, "As a favor to me. Have I ever asked you for anything, Hollywood? Have I ever called the studios to red-light a project? No. Now I'm doing it. Please, put it on hold. CGI something. And let's re-do it. With me."

I liked the show, mainly because my favorite artist was the musical performer. The first song was the best, a nice catchy rock song. It's too bad he didn't appear in the Prince Show sketch. They could have had Fred Armisen as Prince and Prince playing someone who's a Prince impersonator, and Armisen says "no, you're doing Prince all wrong, this is how you do it" and then they both start moaning and screaming like Armisen always does, crawling around on the floor. It would have been funny.

Aside from that, the funniest sketch was the Aaron Neville/Aretha Franklin Super Bowl sketch.

They did that sketch already - back in the '80s with Eddie Murphy and Stevie Wonder.

Fred Armisen on Prince's SNL appearance, taken from a post on Prine's message board.

Quote:
Hello! This is Fred from SNL. I tried to post earlier today and it didn't come up, so apologies if this is a repeat. I just wanted to share my experience from this week. I was so psyched that Prince was the musical guest as was the whole cast. Watching him do his sound check and rehearsal up close was unbelieveable. That band is amazing. I approached him and told him how great I think he is and he was super kind. He made me feel like it was okay that I do an impression of him. I couldn't believe I was standing there talking to him. I have wanted to meet him since forever (who am I talking to? YOU know what I mean!). He is charismatic in person. It's pretty powerful. I don't think it's just because I am such a huge fan. After he left, his guitars (the blue Strat and that Telecaster) were left on stage on stands. I just stood there about a foot away staring at them for ages. THOSE are the ones he plays!!! Right there! Everyone in his group (musicians, singers, crew, assistants) were really sweet. Very positive and happy to be at the show. I even got to meet the NPGMC site people! I always wondered what they looked like. They were super cool too and I bombarded them with questions about the site. In case anyone is wondering about him appearing on the "Prince Show" sketch...
We did ask him early on, and the answer was that he wanted to focus on the musical performance. His people were nice about it and they had no problem with us doing it. We wrote a version that didn't have him in it and a version where he made an appearance, just in case. When I saw him rehearsing with his band, I realized "oh yeah, he's a musician and wants to give the best possible performance!" Why would he want to focus on something else? I understood and was happy just to be in the same room with him.
Fred

Steve Martin, seriously kicks ass. It was awsome to see him back on the show. The episode it's self was somewhat weak, but over all he was good. As was the Prince performance.
