Well maybe it was because of the location of the Diner. Now if it was in a bigger city and busier area, then it would have been open

There is a little diner in my town that is closed on Sunday. They close at 3 p.m. on the rest of the days of the week.

In the episode where they all got locked in the storeroom("Don't Lock Now"-1978), Mel stated that "This town is TOTALLY deserted on Sundays. Why do you think I close the Diner?!" Maybe that explains some of it.

In some small towns it's still common for stores to be closed on Sundays and close earlier on Saturdays.

I have always heard as far as the restaraunt business goes, it's CRUCIAL to be open on the week-ends b/c those are the busiest times.
We have a little cafe here that closes at about 6 o'clock every evening and closed completly on Sunday.
And EVERY holliday closed, and they close a WHOLE week for the fair. I honestly don't see how that guy stays in business! It got so frustrating b/c everytime I wanna met with friends to eat there he would be closed for some reason or anther, it got to the point where I call ahead of time before I go there to eat to make SURE he's gonna be open. He must be doing well SOMEWHERE!!!

I think the girls worked 6 days a week, so they were most likely closed on
Sunday. I imagine they were supposed to be catering to regular working
folks and truck drivers, which probably most likely aren't working on Sunday.
I don't think they were open late on Saturday either, because on the 3rd
season episode "Better Never Than Late", Mel stays open on Saturday
night as an experiment (with hardly any business showing up) and the diner
ends up getting robbed.

I could see them being closed if the businesses around them were. There are several places I eat lunch at during the week because they are convenient to work, but I'd never even consider making a trip down there on the weekends.

Where I live Sundays are prolly one of the busiest days for cafes and diners, b/c people like to go eat right after church.
