Little Red Riding Hood came from behind to claim the No. 1 slot at the holiday box office in North America on Monday, leading a tight field whose rankings could change when final data are issued the next day.

"Hoodwinked," an animated version of the cautionary fable, sold $16.6 million in tickets in its first four days of release beginning Friday, according to studio estimates gathered by Reuters.

It was followed by fellow newcomer "Glory Road," with $16.5 million. The college basketball drama actually outpaced "Hoodwinked" through Sunday, but the latter film was projected to earn more on Monday, thanks to the Martin Luther King holiday.

The competition between the two films has a little extra edge because "Hoodwinked" was released by the new company set up by Miramax Films founders Bob and Harvey Weinstein, while "Glory Road" comes from their former employer, Walt Disney Co. The Weinsteins left Miramax last year after a prolonged dispute with Disney management.

Paramount Pictures' Queen Latifah comedy remake "Last Holiday" opened at No. 3 with a four-day haul of $15.7 million. The top 10 contained one other new release, 20th Century Fox's mythical romantic drama "Tristan & Isolde," which opened at No. 8 with $7.9 million.

Last weekend's champion, Lionsgate's torture thriller "Hostel," fell to No. 5 with $11.7 million. Just ahead of it was Disney's "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe," which fell two to No. 4 with $12.2 million.

Despite the fierce competition at the top, box office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations said overall sales were down 14 percent from the year-ago holiday weekend, when the Samuel L. Jackson basketball drama "Coach Carter" opened at No. 1 with $29.2 million.

you can tell the difference between post-Christmas movies, I barely heard a peep about Hoodwinked, and I have never seen a preview for Glory Road or Tristen & Isolde, whereas the movies from November and December were hyped, hyped, promoted and pushed to death
