Let me first say that if it weren't for "Night Court" I would not have listened to an album of Barry Manilow's or Mel Torme's. I really found myself loving both because of their different styles. Torme is a classic jazz crooner and Manilow is an amazing adult-contemporary pop performer.
So here's my question. Which do you prefer? Are you like Harry and would want to unwind to Mel Torme or are you like Christine and would love to be listening to a little Barry Manilow. By the way, here's a little trivia for you. In one episode, Christine tells Harry that Mel must not have thought Barry was too bad if he cut an album with him. The name of the song Barry and Mel did as a duet is called "Big City Blues" and is from Barry Manilow's album "2:00AM Paradise Cafe." It's a great album and the song would have been a great Harry and Christine wedding song had it happened. The lyrics are perfect. |

I can never understand why they didn't give Dan a musical idol. I mean, both Christine and Harry had musical idols, although Harry did flaunt it more.

My choice: Torme. I just don't get Manilow although I know he has a huge following. We're (PBS) pledging Manilow during the March drive. But my station had Daisy Torme as one of our pledge hosts last drive and she was much more fun!

Mel Torme is a jazz artist/vocalist. Barry Manilow is more adult-contemporary pop.

i like manilow better i can only take mel torme in small doses . the funny thing about the manilow torme debate was that when i went to see barry manilow in concert in 1984 the 2 am paradise cafe album was the album he was touring to promote and he even talked a little bit about mel torme during the concert

I do have to agree that Manilow is an outstanding performer. I saw him in October 2004 in my area and he was fabulous! He can still sing and move. He is just an amazing entertainer. I never saw Mel, but I do have a few of his albums. I like his slow songs better than his fast ones, but he's still fine for me too. |

I think he likes The Beatles. I know he's also a big fan of The Brian Setzer Orchestra. I'm not sure about any other music he may like though.

I have to say I prefer Barry Manilow over Mel Torme, but the Beatles are my favorite.

I like both artists, but I give the edge to Manilow because I'm more familiar with his music. The things I've heard from Torme were nice & jazzy, though.

Here's an odd twist: Tonight we (PBS- Los Angeles) did the live Manilow pledge show I mentioned above and one of our hosts was--- Daisy Torme. Harry Stone would be so ashamed of us putting those two together like that!

And we just saw the ep last night where we find out that Christine loves Barry Manilow.
("Hurricane Part One")Gotta love Harry's reaction when he finds out Mel and Barry have sung together! |
