In one episode, Edith was upset at Archie for his frequent use of the phrase "Goddamn it" so Archie tells her "God-that is your most popular word in the Bible. And dam, like you dam your rivers or something, you know, when somebody does something wrong, God damns it. So there it is. Goddamn it. A great word in the Bible. "
What episode was that from? |

That's from "We're Having a Heat Wave" the first episode of the fourth season. Mike starts in on Archie about Watergate, Archie says he doesn't want to hear any more "Goddamn it!", and when Edith criticizes his language, Archie makes that speech. Hope that helps!

When that episode airs these days on TV Land, the discussion of "God Dam it" has been cut. Initially, TV Land ran all of the episodes, as is. In the last year, I have noticed they have editing the racial slurs and swear words.
I assume they are responding to complaints from overly sensitive viewers. |

That episode broke ground in its use of "gd" on TV. But it was a taboo that wasn't broken as it's still far from acceptable on the tube.

....Archie was supposed to yelp "Goddamn it!!" when he grabbed that coffee pot at the end of act one in the pilot episode {"He [Mike] helps himself to coffee, and he turns the handle around the other way!!"}. However, Norman Lear decided to "give in" to CBS' suggestion that the phrase be "postponed" until a later episode (which, of course, was "We're Having A Heat Wave"), and that Archie's exclamation be "garbled" on the soundtrack, which it was.

...all that was from the SECOND episode of the 4th season, which continued the "heat wave" premise.

The funny thing about Archie saying God Dammit for the first time was that he really screamed it; he didn't just say it under his breath or anything. And then the writers elaborated on his usage of the word. That was bold on their behalf.
