Did both Redd Foxx and LaWanda Page know each other since their childhoods? Because I could have sworn I heard somewhere they grew up together.

I heard that too. I think they were friends and grew up in the same neighborhood at one time. He remembered her and recommended LaWanda to the producers as a possible recurring character/foil for Fred Sanford in season 2(1972-73).
