I really work my Panasonic DMR E80 to death doing all of the converting I do for myself and others, and recently my recorder started giving me fits with discs over 4x speed. I just figured that my machine was dying on me, but as it turns out, this is typical of this machine.
I wouldn't have known this if another trader hadn't told me. This discovery made my day, so I thought I'd share it with other owners.

the DMR series are good recorders but they do have problems as time goes on
and i have found it is cheaper to buy a new 1 then fix them when they start to go i had 2 that started to ONLY record on certain speeds and brands of discs 3 months later they wouldnt record at all and would only play dvds so i had to replace

I have a Panasonic E80, and I successfully use 8x Maxell, if that helps you out. There is a firmware update available on the Panasonic web page - I'm downloading it now, but I'm not going to try it until I clear the contents of the hard drive, and that's not going to happen anytime soon. Let me know if you want a copy of the firmware disc, Jen.

Deb,
Thank you for being willing to do that for me! There's no hurry as the trader I'm shortly converting for is sending me 4x discs, which will keep me in blanks for a long while.

My E80 also does not like 8x discs. Fortunately, you can still get Taiyo-Yuden 4x discs at a good price from supermediastore.com. They work real well in my E80.
