Honolulu Hawaii - September 1964
Jonas Grumby didn't know what to do. An overweight, middle aged man, he had been giving tours of the various islands around Hawaii with his boat, the S. S. Minnow, for several years. Yet today of all days, his first mate, Johnny, quit. Johnny argued that there was to be a terrible storm on their route that day and that all their tours must be canceled. However, Jonas was expecting some VIP passengers that day, including the world famous millionaire Thurston Howell III. Having the Howells on a Minnow tour would give an incredible amount of publicity and Jonas simply did not have to nerve to cancel, even though he knew in the back of his mind Johnny was right. After a heated exchange, Johnny threw his sailor hat on the deck and hollored "HAVE IT YOUR WAY SKIPPER, I *QUIT*!!!! AND IF YOU AND THE HOWELLS ARE KILLED IN THE STORM DON'T SAY I DIDN'T TELL YOU SO!" And then he stomped away, leaving Jonas (or "the Skipper" as everybody seemed to call him) with no one to help out on the boat. He knew the Howells would arrive at any time and he was absolutely desparate. The Skipper searched all over the pier asking every young man he saw if they needed a job, but they all said no. Finally he went down to the beach where he saw all these young people goofing off and having fun. "Under the Boardwalk" by the Drifters was blaring on a transistor radio which made the Skipper look and he saw a group of friends, two guys and a girl sitting together on the beach. One of the guys seemed kind of big and strong and the Skipper hoped that maybe he might be interested in being first mate for a day. There was another guy who had dark hair and was wearing a red shirt, totally zonked out listening to the rock music on the radio, but somehow the Skipper didn't really think he was sailor material. "Hi!" said the Skipper as he came up to introduce himself "I'm Jonas Grumby, skipper of the Minnow. I was wondering, do you need a job? I need a first mate for my boat and you look like you'll do." addressing the brawny, surfer guy, who just laughed. "Well, uh. . .I dunno. I just surf, y'know, like. . ." "Gilligan will do it!" laughed the blonde girl as she grabbed the other guy by the arm and threw him at the Skipper. "But Bunny, I don't. . ." "Oh c'mon, Gilligan you need a job, don't ya?" Bunny chided. "Yeah, goferit, it'll be like groovy, outasight, man. . ." said Duke the surfer. The Skipper was clearly disappointed. Oh well, it seemed like the guy he first wanted had a brain the size of a pea anyway, although this Gilligan guy didn't seem much smarter. Actually none of those kids seemed very smart, now that he thought of it. Still, at least he had two more hands for now and he would start seeking a permanent first mate first thing tomorrow morning. "So your name's Gilligan huh? Is that your first name or your last name." the Skipper asked his new mate. "I only have one name, like Fabian and Liberace." Gilligan laughed. "Well here, take this," said the Skipper and gave him Johnny's hat. "Since you're the first mate now, you may as well wear the hat. Let's go to the boat, I'll explain to you what I want you to do." So the Skipper led Gilligan to the Minnow and prayed that Johnny was all wrong about the upcoming storm. (to be continued) |

Lovey: Oh, don't you dare get angry with me! Tibby |
