Default "SUPERMAN RETURNS" movie

The February issue of WIZARD magazine (#172) contains a 28-page preview of
this year's blockbuster, "SUPERMAN RETURNS." Here are a few tidbits:

Unknown actor Brandon Routh plays Superman, Kevin Spacey plays Lex Luthor,
and Kate Bosworth is Lois Lane. Others in the cast include Sam Huntington (as
Jimmy Olsen) and Frank Langella (as Perry White). In addition, there will be
some footage of the late Marlon Brando as Jor-El (thanks to Brando's estate).

In a fan poll, Christopher Reeve was picked as the actor "who looks the part of
Superman best" with 65% of the votes. Tom Welling received 25%, Brandon
Routh 7% and George Reeves 3%. (Kirk Alyn, the first screen Superman, was
not even mentioned.) In another article, John Haymes Newton and Gerard
Christopher (who starred in the 1988 syndicated SUPERBOY series) were
mentioned, noting that Christopher "made a great Superboy." The article also
stated that Dean Cain (of LOIS & CLARK: THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN) "was the worst Superman ever." Again, nary a word about Kirk
Alyn, who played Superman in the movie serials that started it all.

I think that casting an unknown in the title role was a smart move. Remember that,
in 1978, Christopher Reeve was also a relative unknown.

More movie trivia: Although Routh bulked up to a muscular 250 pounds for the role,
there was no way for him to ever develop the perfect form to register his physique
on camera, so the production team developed a muscle suit that he puts on before
he dons the Superman costume. Costume designer Louise Mingenbach notes, though,
that "Brandon actually was in such good shape that we ended up removing some of
the muscles for specific scenes."

They should have waited for "Smallville" to finish and then spin the series off inot a feature film franchise. Tom Welling deserves to wear the costume over some unknown soap star.

Chris Reeve was a soap star, and an unknown All the Superman actors have been unknowns.

It's not profitable for them to do a big screen Smallville Movie. Smallville only garners close to 5 million a week, they wouldn't even make back any money on the movie with the limited amount of viewers the show gets.

IMO Tom looks more like Superboy. I just don't see him as Superman. He's a great actor, but I just can't see him being able to pull off playing both roles.

Plus Tom Welling has said he doesn't want to wear the tights.

Okay, you have some good points. I still think "Smallville" has been short changed.

TV GUIDE reports that a SMALLVILLE spin-off featuring Aquaman is in the plans
... with an unknown in the role of Arthur ("Aquaman") Curry, not the actor who
played the part on SMALLVILLE. Too bad. I thought he would have made a
good Aquaman.

To be quite honest, I'm excited for this film to be coming out...but at the same time I don't know what to think. He doesn't quite scream Superman when I look at Brandon. I hope it has the right story and brings new viewers into it (so the movie will make more money and the movies continue), but at the same time I don't want it to be the first Superman movie either. I've heard they were going more for a Superman II storyline...is this correct? I've been on the Blue Tights Network website on several occassions, and you can download video diaries, but I have dial-up so I haven't been able to catch up on what they have to say there or see previews. Is there anything special mentioned in them?

As for Tom Welling playing the part, I wouldn't like it at all. I love him as Clark Kent, but I don't think I'd like to see him portraying Superman. Although he is almost 30, he still looks 19 to me. Besides, going straight to Superman isn't very realistic....and I want the shows and the movies to be seperate.
