Default It always seemed to me that Ruben felt sorry for Thelma and that's why he married her

He just never showed that he really wanted to marry Thelma. He was just forced into by Thelma giving him the ultimatum-lol They just wasn't believable as a couple to me.

I think that Reuben had some comment problems (Like a lot of Males) . He got burned once before and I think that just stuck in his head. Yeah Thelma gave Reuben an ultimatum but when he back out of the wedding, she had enough. So when she became more independent, I think he fell in love with her then. When they finally got married he was ready. She fought for her man she deserved him.

Default I respectfully disagree

I have to respectfully disagree that the reason Rueben married Thelma is that he felt sorry for her. The idea that a minister would marry a woman out of pity does not give Rueben's character much credit. Besides, he did not have to date Thelma or propose or marry her if he didn't want to. He had plenty of chances to get out (his mother didn't like Thelma's "big bones," Thelma stated she was going to date other men, Thelma had amnesia, Thelma went into the Army and fell for another guy) but he always stayed in the relationship.

As for not buying them as a couple, I think that they had a great rapport with each other and balanced each other out. He could be a "stuffed shirt" and she could be "excitable" and they brought out the best in each other. Theirs might not have been a smokin' hot relationship, but a sweet, loving, fun, long-term one. I was a teenager when the show was on and that is the type of relationship I hoped to have one day...and luckily my husband and I have had so far six years of marriage with all of these qualities.

Anyway, that's my take on their relationship.

Rueben might have hit the carpet at his and Thelma's first wedding, but he still wanted to get married. Thelma had just about given up, joining the Army and getting involved with another man; Rueben could have walked away free and clear, but he stayed around still wanting to marry Thelma. I still maintain that he did not feel sorry for her, he loved her.

Are you all talking about the kiss right after they exchange vows? If so, I agree...I thought it was great how he goes "all right" with such enthusiasm right before the kiss. I'd loved to be kissed like that!
