Thought Tipping

I wish they would pay waiters and waitresses a normal wage and do away with tipping altogether. I understand that they make their money from tips and I do tip well, but why should I have to pay extra just because someone's doing their job??

Restaurant tabs are expensive enough these days and I think eliminating tipping would eliminate arguments over how much to tip, etc...

What's even worse is places like Dunkin' Donuts, where they have a tip jar on the counter. Now, I can understand tipping in a restaurant, because the waiters and waitresses do bring your food to your table. But you have to go to the counter and get your own food and drinks in fast food places. And half the time, they don't even push the coffee across the counter. Needless to say, I don't tip in those places and never will.

anyways, I see your point - a lot of places expect you to tip no matter how bad the service is, because the waiters/esses share the tips etc. - i agree with the pay people what they are worth theory as well, why should they have to rely on tips as part of their wage?

I thought this was going to be about cows.

Anyway, I think if you work at a restaurant you deserve a tip. Not at a fast food joint.

I never tip. Hey, I'm Dutch, ok? We have a reputation of cheapness, so we have to live up to it.

It's like you said it, Doc, it's their jobs. And besides, in Holland waiters and wiatresses don't make their money from tips but actually from their salary.

Reminds me of the great opening dialogue of 'Reservoir Dogs'...

i always tips, sometimes better than others depending on my check that day. If a waiter/ress is really really good and nice, I am sure to leave a good tip. One night, me and Jonathan went to Outback and the guy was trianing, but he was soo nice and did a really good job, we left him a nice tip and I wrote a note on the bill saying "Good luck training"... of course, Jonathan thought I was a dork

Tipping should only be done away with if the workers wages are made higher.

I don't mind tipping if and only if it is done in RESTAURANTS. Elsewhere, you ain't getting any money from me. I am a college student and I don't have $1000/week to spend. Fast food places don't need them. REAL RESTAURANTS. Period.

I don't mind tipping, but what I do hate is when they establish the amount of money you have to leave as a tip. This is very expensive, considering that in hotels you have to give a tip to EVERYBODY.

We actually had a waitress get angry at us because although we left a decent tip . we were told that it wasn't the exact gratuity amount she usually expected .. is it mandatory in most states that you have to leave a certain amount as a tip ?
