new Mariah Carey vs. old Mariah Carey

i personally like her old music much better than the stuff she released on the Emancipation of Mimi. do you agree that her old music was better (meaning her music in the early '90s) than her newer music?

old Mariah was better, circa 90 to 96. People critique Madonna at trying to stay popular with young people, but I think Mariah is far more guilty at it. Mariah saw her main fanbase were mostly over-30 housewives, which are a loyal market, but she figured she'd do even better if she sold herself out to trying to appeal to kids, hence the sudden turn from soulful song stylist to flavor of the month rapper hag.

Hopefully she learned her lesson because it was We Belong Together, a song that sounded a lot more like the songs she did in the early 90's than one of her rap attempts that put her back on the top of the charts. I was disapointed with "Shake It Off" however, if the song had been sped up just a hair and given more of a beat to it, it could've been a great Janet-esque dance song (Jam and Lewis were behind the song too, which explains the Janetness... but the insistance of keeping the song midtempo really kept the song from leaping out at you)

I prefer her newer material. Don't Forget About Us is the only single from "Emancipation..." that I don't really like that much.

Definitely the old Mariah. The ballads she sang in the early 90s were amazing. You just knew she'd go down in music history and be one of the classics. Now it's like she's trying to be young again. Isn't she like 30 now?

I definetely like her older stuff better from the '90s. "Fantasy", "Emotions", "Vision Of Love" and "Make it Happen" are all great songs.

Some of her songs like "Through the Rain", "All I Wanted" and "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" from her Charmbracelet album are pretty good. I don't like a lot of her recent stuff, though. I don't like her rap sounding songs very much.

I don't think Mariah is just trying to appeal to kids, I think that she genuinely likes more r&b music. She said in a recent interview that it was her husband that was trying to craft her into a Pop/Ballad singer. Here's a smal part of an interview from Mariah:

"“He said to me, we need more pop songs, we can’t release your favourite song off the [1995] Daydream album, which of course was always the most R&B song, it’s not acceptable to pop audiences, we’re going to go with ‘Forever’.” This, she says dismissively, was “a pop record where I’m singing long notes and just belting out the whole time and I’m sure a lot of people enjoyed it but it’s not my favourite song that I’ve ever written, you know what I mean?”

Her colleagues say Carey chafed at her early marketing as a white, ballad-singing diva, and was one of the first mainstream artists to record hip-hop versions of her singles for the club scene. Carey does not blame Mottola alone for her early pop positioning but argues that most music company executives are out of touch. “When I first got my record deal I was so surprised. I was, like, why are all these older people trying to tell me what’s going to sell to people my age?”
Her own generation always wanted to hear “that fusion” of her voice and her urban influences, she argues: “They want to hear someone singing a ballad over a beat.”

She made her move into the hip-hop market after her 1997 divorce from Mottola (her divorce from his company came four years later). But her duets with the likes of Sean “P. Diddy” Combs and Missy Elliott seemed to coincide with the start of her commercial troubles.

By the time of her breakdown in 2001, there were plenty of critics urging her to return to safer territory. “They said, what Mariah Carey needs to do is go back to wearing long gowns, be covered up and have some great writers write some songs for her and produce some records for her and do ballads.”

But Carey argues that she is simply moving with her market and adds that there are demographic trends supporting her brand’s new positioning.

well, Mariah was doing r&b songs from her debut album, but the difference between what she was doing then and what she does now is that she was more geared to the Luther/Anita Baker audience, while now she's trying to be marketed to the Ashanti/Beyonce fanbase, a whole different r&b market, and a much younger "trendy" audience than that she was trying to appeal to fifteen years ago

I so agree. The old one was better. This hip-hop crap has got to go. I got her remix song "heartbreaker" and I didn't know until I played it at home that this was the UNEDITED VERSION. Well, Snoop Dogg is on the song "rapping" abt hoes, D***(male private part) and shoving it down a woman's throat, sucking D, etc. I am so appalled that a person like Mariah would promote something like that on her music. I am not naive that those things are part of human sexuality, but as far as Mariah's music, why does she feel the need to allow her music be remixed like that (she has to approve it)?
Does she promote the idea of women being talked to like that? What one does in the privacy of their home is one thing, but to have it on a single of yours that children and young people will definitely hear is beyond belief.

also, anyone have pics of her before and after? I know she had teeth work done because her teeth used to be imperfect. Also, I think she might have had a nose job done. I already know abt those fake boobs.

yeah she was "canoodling" with Tommy Mottola WHILE HE WAS MARRIED!!! he then filed for divorce and VIOLA they were planning their wedding. She calls it HER NIGHTMARE.

I LOVED Mariah when she was younger (vision of love, make it happen, someday, hero) and I loved all her old music, I even joined her fanclub and got to meet her. I was a huge fan when I was little and then she just made a 180, I don't care for her now.

about Mariah working with rappers, sometimes the occasional hip hop guest isn't so bad, but Mariah overdoes it. Same problem befell J. Lo. I think J. Lo could have a comeback musically if she ditches the whole hip hop thing period and comes back with a cd of hot Latin beats.

An example of a good hip hop guest track would be "Galvanize" by Chemical Brothers and Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest. By melting the techno of CB and the hip hop of Q-Tip, it kinda became a genre of its own, and the song appeals to people who hate hip hop and appeals to people who hate electronica. Mariah's collaborations are the type that if you're not a fan of the guest in question, then you may as well hit the skip button.

And I find it funny she's talking about demographics, the woman is 36... the majority of the "I used to like her before she went all hip hop on us" people are actually younger than she is. I'm a decade younger than her, I was 10 when she became famous... I don't like hip hop. The majority of the fans who love what she does now were 5 and under when her first album hit the scene, I haven't met very many people who like the tracks off Glitter more than the tracks off "Mariah Carey" who were born before 1985 or so.

I found that very hilarious. That really does sum up the new image.
I personally have never been a big Mariah fan, but I just don't like image and vibe I get from most of her new stuff. I did like "We Belong Together" because it sounded like a good-for-all ages ballad. But most of the new videos really portray her as, like said before "a flavor of the month rapper hag".
