Movie recommendations needed!!!

Iv'e been watching alot of really bad movies lately, and was just hoping that maybe some of you could help me out in finding some good ones to watch. My favorite genres are: Independant films, documentaries, sports movies, and ANYTHING that's emotional. I absolutely love touching and heartwarming stories. Anyway, if you've seen any movie that you think I might enjoy, please post it!! Also, if any of you want a huge list of my favorite movies, just email, or P.M. me, and I'd be more then happy to share them with you.

Last night I watched The 40 Year Old Virgin. It wasn't super great, but had some good laughs. I enjoyed it.

Four Brothers was good. I like Mark Wahlberg.

A good documentary is March Of The Penguins.

Brian D. just recommended the movie, The Squid and the Whale.

You've probably seen them, but I love the movies, Election and The Pianist.

A couple of independent movies that I've enjoyed are Tree's Lounge and You Can Count On Me.

The Boys Of St. Vincent is also incredible.

That's all that comes to mind now.

Thanks for the recommendations Janice. The only movie you listed that Iv'e seen is You Can Count On Me, which I really enjoyed. Laura Linney, and Mark Ruffalo were awesome in it. Iv'e been seeing previews for The March Of The Penguins, and it looks really good. It's actually on demand now, so I'll probably watch it tonight. I'll put the other movies you mentioned on my "to see list," and let you know as I watch them, what I thought of them. Thanks again for the recommendations!!

I agree with 40 Year Old Virgin, definately vulgar and off-color at times, but it remained hilarious the entire run and perhaps is the sole reason why NBC is giving The Office time to find an audience instead of killing it (because Steve Carell stars in both).

Kinsey was really good, although a little too thought-provoking and shocking for middle America, all three of its stars (Liam Neeson, Peter Sarsgaard, Laura Linney) were great and at their best here. Based on a true story too

Except for The Day Before Tomorrow (which really is just a big-budget special effects orgy ala ID4) and Bubble Boy, you really can't go wrong with any Jake Gyllenhaal film, especially Donnie Darko, Moonlight Mile or The Good Girl, I've yet to see Proof, Jarhead or Brokeback, but all are getting good reviews. He is on his way to being the Dustin Hoffman or Robert DeNiro for our generation if he keeps taking quality scripts up.

But if you want an older movie, my all time favorite movie is The Color Purple, it is a timeless story that never gets old and even though it's been twenty years, I think it's still an outrage that it was snubbed by the Oscar people. Halle became the first African-American Best Actress winner, but Whoopi Goldberg (in easily her best film performance) should've won the same award fifteen years earlier.

Hotel Rwanda
Roll Bounce-70's Roller Disco movie, it was good for all the styles and clothes back then. They did a good job, the movie brought back a lot of memories.

My recommendations are as follows:

The Squid and the Whale: excellent movie about divorce and what it does to a family. It is based on the real life experiences of the director.


11:14 It is in some ways very similiar to Crash. It is an ensemble movie with different stories that all interweave in the end.

Havoc: It stars Ann Hathaway, the star of the Princess Diaries and Ella Enchanted. This is a much different role for her as she deals with drugs, sex, alcohol and fitting in as a rich teenager who is bored with her life.

Old Boy: This is a Korean film that is subtitled. That scares alot of people off, but it is an exceptional film with a great twist for an ending.

Mysterious Skin: This is a very dark and disturbing film about a couple of teenage boys who come of age. Very good.

High Tension A very good horror film. It was made in France, but it was dubbed in English, so that shouldn't be a problem. It also has a nice twist for an ending.

Murderball This is a documentary about quadriplegics who play full contact rugby in crazy wheel chairs. Very good documentary.

Those sound really good, and I'll definitely check them all out. I already have them all written down, and will get around to watching them slowly but showly.

I actually kind of liked Bubble Boy. Hey, what can I say, every once in awhile you just fall in love with one of those goofy and absurd movies that you're suppose to absolutely hate. I agree with hung up about Jake Gylenhall. When I first started seeing his films, I didn't think much of him, but he's proving to be one of Hollywood's most talented actors out there. He can convincingly play almost any role.

The Color Purple was an amazing movie. Not my favorite Spielberg film, but definitely an amazing film nonetheless. My mom tried getting me to watch it for years, and I always declined, but when I finally did check it out, I was absolutely blown away. A definite masterpiece. It's my brother's fiancee's favorite movie as well.

Crash, and the Notebook were also two absolutely phenomenal films. Infact, they were two of my top three favorite films I saw in 2005. I'm not usually into love stories, but I was with The Notebook from the beginning, to the very end. That film was a masterpiece as far as I'm concerned. As far as Crash goes, just read the thread I started about it, and you'll see how much I enjoyed it.

I actually did watch the first half of Old Boy when you recommended it to me Brian. I would have watched the whole thing, but it was in September that I rented it, a day before my trip to Arizona, so I couldn't finish watching it because I had to pack. It was really weird, but definitely drew me in. It was kind of hard to figure out, but that's partially why I was so fascinated with it. I'll definitely watch the rest of it. I don't know why, but it kind of reminded me of Run Lola Run. Maybe because of how original, and unconventional it was.

Iv'e heard an awful lot about Murderball, and have been really looking forward to checking it out. It's gotten some pretty awesome reviews. Seems like the kind of thing I'd like. The Squid and the whale also sounds really good, so I'll definitely be checking that out very soon. My parents are divorced, so I'll probably be able to relate with it.

Anyways, thanks so much for the recommendations everyone. Last year was a pretty bland year for the most part as far as movie watching went for me. Hopefully though, with your guys' recommendations, this year will be better. Thanks again!!

Documentaries: I haven't seen many but I really wanted to check out Mad Hot Ballroom dancing.
Emotional: Cinderella Man and Finding Neverland always get me.

I saw Mean Creek, and really liked it. For one thing, it was a very well acted movie, with an awesome storyline, but also because it was filmed at the river that I visit pretty much every week. It was funny watching them row past many of the areas that I hang out at. I'll check out the other ones you listed as well. Cinderella Man looks awesome!!

If you haven't seen Four Brothers go get it....Its awesome.
