The only thing blander than the new TV GUIDE -- with its generic, white
background cover each week -- is the new LIFE "magazine" (and I use the term
loosely), a skimpy, 20-page weekly newspaper insert like PARADE, but less
interesting). From these publications, one would conclude that the magazine
is a dead (or at least dying) art form.

Does anyone out there remember THE SATURDAY EVENING POST? TV RADIO
MIRROR? PHOTOPLAY? They're gone, and I predict that LIFE and TV GUIDE
will soon join them.

The Saturday Evening Post still publishes, except now as a monthly. Other magazines gone and possibler forgotten: Ramparts, Look, Saturday Review.

A lot of general interest magazines bit the dist because publishers wanted to go after specific groups and demographics. As Calvin and Hobbes said, Whatever happened to the melting pot? - No money in it."

Fun fact - the only segments of magazines to gain circulation in 2005 are women's magazines and celebrity magazines.

I agree with u about the new tv guide. People seem to like it better than the old one but I don't cuz its pretty much useless for finding out whats gonna be on tv during the day, its just like a tv magazine.

You're exactly right. There are special interest magazines for virtually every
hobby and interest you can think of now.

The weekly tabloids (ENQUIRER, GLOBE, STAR, etc.) are what killed the monthly movie and TV fan magazines (in my opinion).

I always regarded LOOK as, basically, an imitator of LIFE (in its heyday).
For a while, THE SATURDAY EVENING POST tried to imitate LIFE, too (one
critic said the POST tried to "put on a mini-skirt" during that period). I knew
the POST had switched to a monthly schedule but did not know it still
existed in even that format. Maybe it doesn't have as wide a distribution.
(We don't have a newstand in this town, so I only know what is on the
shelves at the supermarkets and Wal-Mart.)

At any rate, I suppose (as others have observed) it is the electronic media
(specifically the Internet) that has wiped out a lot of magazine readership.

Are some Old TV Guide magazines worth money? And if they are do you think any coming out within the next 10 years will be worth anything say 40-50 years down the road?

The new TV Guide is a joke. There are hardly any tv listings at all in it. It's just another infotainment rag, like Star, only far less interesting...

I wonder if enough people either cancel or don't bother to renew their subscriptions, TV GUIDE would revert to its original format. (Remember the
so-called "new and improved" Coca-Cola a few years ago? How long did it last?)

In the early fifties, before TV GUIDE went national, there was a similar magazine
called TV DIGEST (which is where the creator of TV GUIDE got the idea). No
one is using that name now. An enterprising publisher should seize the
opportunity to introduce a new TV DIGEST.

I hardly ever look at my tv guide anymore. I just get them because I've been collecting them since 1983. The Cover is bland and the only good thing about it are the color pictures. But if you want to know whats on tv, you might as well turn elsewhere.
