I just thought I'd pass this along to my trading friends...I noticed that on iTunes you can LEGALLY buy episodes of classics such as Dragnet, Adam-12, and Alfred Hitchcock Presents (plus there are more current shows). Thought I'd pass that along!

But you can ONLY watch them on your computer (unless your computer is hooked into your tv set), and the quality of the Apple H.264 codec is crap. The videos play back with a lot of jerks, even on a modest 3.0Ghz PC. So be prepared to pay $2 for a cruddy inferior version, and be prepared to hunker over your computer to see it.
The quality is also optimized for the itty-bitty iPod Video screen. / |

Actually, I'm not sure what this site's policy is on DRM, so I 'll simply say, there is a legal program out there that removes DRM protection from Napster & iTunes audio files so you can play tracks legally purchased from Napster on an iPod & tracks purchased from iTunes on an non-iPod MP3 player. I don't know if it works on video files.
For those who don't know what DRM is, it's a way for vendors to control how you use their product. My first MP3 player was a Rio & I PAID FOR many tracks that I downloaded from Napster. They were in WMV format & would play just fine on the Rio. But when my Rio croaked & I bought an iPod, those WMV files wouldn't play on the iPod (because they are different file formats) & most conversion programs (WMV to MP3) won't convert WMV files with DRM protection, eventhough they were legally purchased from Napster. So I either REPURCHASE those tracks from iTunes (so they will play on my iPod) or find a way to remove the DRM. In a nutshell, it's iTunes' way of securing customers with iPods & Napster's way of securing customers with non-iPods. Having said all that, I'd think since iTunes video files are designed for the iPod small screen, that they would not be very good quality on a large screen tv. It's kind of like you can shrink a scanned image down & it will still look good, but when you try to blow it up, it's harder to retain good quality. |
