By today's standards, you might find Soap a little tame or wonder what all the fuss was about. But back in the '70s, it was revolutionary - it satired and skewered probably the most dysfunctional family in TV history up to that point.

It had the first openly gay character, chronicled mental illness, sexual dysfunction, fetishism in a wonderfully politically incorrect way.

And this was in a time when families were dysfunctional, but "dysfunctional" hadn't become a national catchphrase.

Soap is wonderfully absurd and satirical and there's even some genuinely touching moments thrown in as well.

It's too bad that Soap never had a proper finale, where all the loose ends were tied up. One more season could have resolved season four's dilemmas and wrapped things up nicely.

Rent the DVDs if you can and check it out.
