Contactmusic.com says Hollywood director Steven Spielberg is apparently planning to remake the 60's classic children's musical, which starred Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke.
Sir Richard Eyre, director of the London stage show, has reportedly been approached by Spielberg to helm the project. Eyre's stage show is inspired both by the movie and the P.L. Travers books on which the film itself was based. Contactmusic.com quotes Eyre as saying: "Spielberg wants to make a new film of Mary Poppins and we've talked about it a lot. "It will be hard to outdo the original but kids love the story and I'm sure that the remake will be a real success." There is no official word from from Dreamworks (or rather Paramount) as yet on the project. |

Can't these people leave well enough alone? Do they really want to mess with one of the most beloved films of all time? This kind of thing makes me crazy!

So which scene is Mary Poppins' magic gonna make the world fall under Martian rule who will eventually die from bacteria?
No offense, I love WOTW by Spielberg, and I love Poppins, but putting the two together is like putting together milk with pizza! Maybe he can pull it off, who knows? Did he ever try his hand at animation? Pat |

A remake of Mary Poppins?? Personally I'm not for it. The original just can't be beat. Besides, don't most remakes flop anyways? I think they should just put the whole idea down.

I agree with Lolac. It looks like Steven Spielberg is trying to become the next
Walt Disney. And there will NEVER be another Walt Disney. Disney didn't become a legend and a genius by imitating somebody else. |

I am not as worried if Steven Speilberg attempts this project.
However, If I hear Tim Burton (or Johnny Depp) have any interest in this project - I will throw-up on the spot.
