I truly miss them. Especially at the holidays when they had those good old holiday specials.
What are your favorite memory of variety shows? |

I think it would be cool to see more variety shows. However, if the variety show talent pool only consists of Jessica Simpson wannabes, then I'll stick with reruns.

Exactly... with todays talent, your variety shows will be full of gangsta's and ho's. No thanks!

Ah, I have been waiting a long time for this post. YES! TV Land should show
some of the classic TV variety shows that my generation grew up with. I just saw a biography of Andy Williams, on the Biography channel, recently. It made me yearn for the 1950s and 1960s, when we had weekly series starring Perry Como, Dinah Shore, Ernie Ford, and others. For a brief time, TV Land did show some comedy-variety series (THE FLIP WILSON SHOW, THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW). I think the format died out in the 1970s (along with the western genre). I don't think we will see the form again because (as another poster said) the same caliber of talent just isn't out there today. Pop music has changed. The way we watch television has changed. You can't go back (except via video and DVD). |

TV Land shouldn't air variety shows at all because too much footage is missing. TV LAND reduces a 60 min program to 25 min. That's just too much information missing for me to watch. That's why I never watched the Flip Wilson show

I've been getting into the old variety shows lately. I got the Tony Orlando & Dawn dvd and recently got the Captain and Tennille dvd, mainly for the guests. When I saw the cast of Welcome Back Kotter was included on one of the shows, I decided I wanted to check it out. I don't remember all the other guests included, but that's the main reason I bought that dvd. I remember liking the Tony Orlando show back in the day. I plan on getting the Donny & Marie dvd when that comes out too, and get the Sonny & Cher set that's already out. They're all from the same company and they do a decent job.

Well that's the best way to do it, DVD, because TV land will cut out tons of footage. First of all why would they air a TV program in a 30 min time slot that was Originally 60 min? That's just plain stupid. |
