Default Sony and the season 2 catch 22

I have a feeling that with Sony deciding to give Diff'rent Strokes a different wind despite not having the best sales, a good bet would be that if you have any interest in DS in the least, to pick season 2 of that set up. IMO, the better return investment they get on DS will certainly bode well for Sony deciding that Who's The Boss and 227 are both worth a second chance on DVD (I also think the better that show does, the better a chance other 80's classics such as Silver Spoons, Square Pegs and The Facts Of Life (even though I think FOL would be a far bigger DVD success than DS) have as well to be released). Sony has a huge 1980's catalog but they seem hesitant to mine it in comparison to the 1970's shows (even though the likes of Maude and One Day At A Time are still being ignored) and that they have enough hope that DS season 2 might pick sales up, hopefully it will wake Sony's eyes up to all their 1980's catalog.

In the past, season 2 sales can sometimes pick up briskly and really boost the franchise, Mary Tyler Moore (which was left for dead for nearly 3 years) and more recently Party Of Five (season 1 was released to little fanfare early last year, while season 2 has reportedly been selling very respectably in the last week) are examples of this, I think if Sony likes what they see with Diff'rent Strokes season 2's numbers, they won't hesitate to jump to the conclusion that WTB might also be worth a second chance on DVD. Maybe DS season 1 outsold WTB, but I highly doubt that the sales for WTB season 1 were so horrible that the remote idea of even releasing season 2 this decade is unfathomable, a lot of people seemed to buy the set.

Why won't Sony just release sales statistics anyway? inquiring minds want to know. Tony Danza's been doing well on TV-DVD with Taxi and Alyssa Milano's having a TV-DVD smash with Charmed.

I think in some respects for nostalgic sales, it's better to release the 70's stuff first. The kids who watched the 80's sitcoms probably need a little more time before they start longing for their classic tv from childhood.

I'm just generalising here... I love my 80's sitcoms and want them all on dvd, but it makes sense to satisfy the lovers of 70's tv as they're in their nostalgic prime.

I would get DS Season 2 if I had the money but don't right now. Plus I don't like it that they would rely on sales of one show to base a release of another show on

it really gets on my nerves that Sony bases an entire decade on the sales of one show. I remember reading that DS and Punky Brewster's sales were hurting the chances of Silver Spoons and Facts Of Life on DVD, and it really doesn't make sense to me. That'd be like Sony deciding Seinfeld isn't worth putting out on DVD because Mad About You (a show which had ties to both Seinfeld and Friends) wasn't a success on DVD.

I know that is so stupid because every show has it's own individual fanbases, and some shows have bigger fanbases on the other. I sometimes wonder if Sony isn't expecting all it's shows to do Seinfeld numbers

Why don't they just release the second season!!! I didn't want to buy the first cause I've already seen all of the episodes. They should do more research on why people don't buy it.

well, wanting season 2 to come out, while refusing to buy season 1 is hardly the way to boost morale. If you want season 2 to come out, buy season 1.
