"Penny's Christmas". Willona and Penny go to the Department Store together and then Willona Tells Penny to meet her in an hour and if they miss each other just go ahead home. What kind of mother lets a 11 year old go shopping ALONE? It was because of Willona's dumb decision that Penny was nabbed for Shoplifting. I think the Social Worker should have taken Penny away from Willona after that. Very Dumb Parenting by Willona

My mom was a child of the 70's and her and my aunts would take the bus to the movies and department stores and that was when she was around 11/12. When I was 11-14 whenever I wanted to go to the mall my mom would drop me and friends off at the mall for us to shop and walk around. I see nothing wrong with it especially if she's familiar with the area that she's in. If you live in the city now you can see a lot of kids taking the city bus to go to school and what not. Wilona told Penny to take a cab home, and that's safer then the city bus.

Besides, how many times over the seasons were we told how dangerous the ghetto was??? JJ got robbed of his buckets! Thelma was assaulted when she went to the store. Michael got jumped. Flo had her "bicylce" (LOL) stolen (really her purse). The laundry room got vandalized. etc. etc. etc. There were way too many references abt the neighborhood being dangerous. Penny should not have been told to walk home.
Why couldn't Willona have told her, "Meet me at the store/mall entrance?" |

Penny wasn't told to walk home, Wilona told her to take a cab home. Just because she lived in the project it didn't keep her from going outside and playing. It would be the same difference if Penny were outside playing or riding her bike. So I don't see the big deal. She was taking a Cab home. I know Penny had to go to school and stand at the bus stop. Sometimes your the only kid at the bus stop before the other kids would get there. You have to let your kids become independent at some point you can't always hold their hand and walk them across the street. Kids are kidnapped/raped/killed in the most ritzy of neighborhoods. So Penny shopping in the mall and taking a cab home wasn't a big deal and it didn't make Wilona a bad mother. IMO |

Actually I didn't watch the episode yesterday. I am relying on my 'bad memory' (LOL)...i forgot she told her to catch a cab...my mistake. I never said it made her a bad mother...that's SOLOMAN SAYING THAT...LMAO!!! Good ol' Soloman, never ceases to amaze me with his wit...I get what you're saying Brie. It just seems to me, ever since watching Good Times since it's first airing, they always seemed to make the area the Evans live in, SOOOOO TERRIBLE. I know there are areas that are like this, and families adjust and use their instincts and their common sense to live the best they can.

Yes, it's the same when an 11 yr old take a city bus alone. Kids in NY take the subway. She went outside and played alone. Michael would go out and play basketball. Same thing in my book. |
