Smile What's Happening List

Hi What's Happening fans!! Wanted to let you know a started a discussion list about the show at www.onelist.com. Look under sitcoms for What's Happening and sign up. I loved Shirley Hemphill and was so sad and shocked by her untimely death last December. I haven't heard a thing about what she died from, if it was sudden or if she had been ill for a long time. Does anybody know? I would love to know. Shirley made the show for me. Anyway, would be nice to meet someone who, like me, still has fond memories of What's Happening. C-Ya!

It was very sad to hear about the death of
shirley, I saw her on an episode of martin.
at that time she was walking kind of slow,
then I saw her "vibe" with sinbad, she then
was walking with a cane, she and martin
lawrence were very good friends of the set.
she gave him a place to stay when he had
no where to go. I had the honor of seeing
her in hollywood, her favorite place to
eat was a "jack-in-the-box" resturant, it
was on Hollywood blvd. I was mad when it
closed.

De De, you seem to know a lot about Shirley. Tell us more. I really don't know that much. I just thought she was adorable and funny. Can't believe she is gone. Did you ever hear what was the cause of death. All I have ever heard is natural causes, whatever that is. She was only like 52. Not fair.

Sad

hi montgomery,
yes It is very sad, I heard see died of
natural causes, and that her gardner found
her dead in her bed. but we could tell
something was wrong, she did say on the show
that she was into real estate. the show was
on when my daughter was about 5 years old,
now 28. shirley was in the jack-in-the-box
I was talking about, so my daughter ask
shirley how did she get off tv? shirley
laughed and told my daughter that she unscrewed the back of the tv and stepped out
to get her something to eat. It was so funny
if you have more questions please fill free
to ask me. I was living in hollywood at the
time.

I know Shirley did a couple of workout video's shortly before she died. Now that's ironic isn't it? I wonder if they are available somewhere? I did a search on the net for Shirly Hemphill and What's Happening. There is hardly anything out there. If I knew anything about web pages, I'd make one about Shirley. I don't know where you'd go to find out more about her.

The passing of Shirley Hemphill at the age of 52 was indeed tragic. I seem to remember reading at the time that she had been experiencing some health problems in the years prior to her death, but I do not know the nature of her illness. What was also ironic is the fact that Mabel King, the actress who portrayed Raj and Dee's mother on the show, passed away one month prior to Shirley Hemphill. Ms. King was 67 years old. It would be interesting to learn what the surviving cast members are doing these days. Perhaps DeDe (who seems to be a very knowledgable contributor!) or someone else can provide some insight on this.

Sad

Well, I remember seeing Shirley and Dwanye on the Jenny Jones show. She looked pretty healthy then. She must have died right after that because they were talking about the death of Mable. Then a little after that, I think I saw an segment on her on Inside Edition (i think. They were talking about her death. But they never said the cause of death.
